I’ve posted about contemporary artist Carlos Enriquez-Gonzalez before on the Blogin, and I should have made this post months ago. Carlos came to visit NYC a couple of months ago to drop off a few pieces of his artwork for Christie’s Pop Culture Art Auction in December.

When I met him at his hotel, he brought out some of the Christie’s pieces as well as a new one, the Vagina Lips Tits Monster! Needless to say, I was floored! This monster is the perfect mixture of everything that makes Carlos’ art great! Vaginas! Tits! Exposed Brains!

Each piece is fiberglass, hand painted, and limited to editions of about eight.

Carlos is also able to get this amazing paint quality that reflects the light in a million different ways.

The way the color reflects in different sorts of light kind of reminds me of fine art glass work from Tiffany’s or Loetz.

Carlos holding his (in)famous Vagina Monster. I actually received an email a few weeks ago from Carlos that the piece he was holding sold in London at Phillips de Pury for a whopping $5,500. That is the highest ever for one of his small pieces!

I think one of the greatest moments I had while hanging with Carlos was the chance to take a peek into one of his sketch books. These are very personal to him, and I felt honored that he let me take a look. The book was filled with literally hundreds of drawings of bizarre human appendage monsters. Each sketch had notes in regards to sizes and colors, while some of the pieces were conceptualized as 8-10 story sculptures! He also let me take a photo (all I had was my iPhone) of his original sketch for the Vagina Lips Tits Monster. Truly a treat! Even more of a treat was that Carlos gave me the opportunity to purchase this sculpture. I now own a work of art and it feels amazing.
