Digging For Fire Vol. 21: 400 Blows – The New Lords On the Block
400 Blows* started out as the perfect post-punk to EBM crossover band. Heavy helpings of Electro/EBM (ala Front 242, Portion Control) mixed with funky rhythm work (ala Gang of Four, A Certain Ratio). The New Lords On the Block from 1989 was their third and final album and saw them veering more into the EBM, Industrial direction. Lots of tape loops and synth driven beats replace the angular funky guitar work of their earlier releases. This is a must for anyone who is a fan of early bass & sample driven work of KMFDM. Much like What Do You Know Deutschland, Don’t Blow Your Top or UAIOE, The New Lords On the Block has that same everything and the kitchen sink approach to making songs. Mixing and matching influences pretty openly into their own composition and relying heavily on some sampled loops. Acually I’d also recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Aphex Twin. A lot of they keyboards work has that same sparse, moody & twitchy rhythmic work of Richard D. Jame’s earlier albums.
400 Blows – The New Lords On the Block
*Not to be confused with Los Angeles band 400 Blows on GSL (Gold Standard Laboratories).
