A Million Uppercuts, 8 Grammy Nods

Tha Carter III

No surprise here. The Grammy nominees were announced today and Lil’ Wayne garnered the most with eight, one more than “rockers” Coldplay. Weezy is up for Best Rap Album, Rap Song (”Lollipop” and “Swagga Like Us“), Rap Performance by a Duo or Group (”Mr. Carter” featuring Jay-Z and “Swagga Like Us“), Rap/Sung Collaboration (”Got Money” featuring T-Pain), Rap Solo Performance (”A Milli“), and the coveted Best Album of the Year. The others in Album of the Year category are Coldplay’s Vida la Vida, Ne-Yo’s Year of the Gentleman, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss’ Raising Sand, and Radiohead’s In Rainbows. Radiohead was nominated in six other categories and I have a feeling it’s going to be a near-sweep for them.

Somehow Onyx’s Cold Case Files was completely overlooked. Maybe because their is no Album of the Millennium category.

I think this best sums up how out of touch the Grammys are…
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss’ “Raising Sand” for Best Album of 2008

  2. Oh Mars Says:

Or Kid Rock’s “Rock ‘N Roll Jesus” for Best Rock Album. It’s in the album title, right?

  3. My Pal the Crook Says:

Well at the very least Kid Rock is more relevant that Robert Plant these days. They were previewing and advertising that “Raising Sand” album the whole time I was in Sweden. I honestly felt embarrassed for Robert Plant that this is what his musical career has now come to.

    Fixed.

I like Lil’ Wayne - I think he’s very talented, but he’s fallen so far into the single-machine that it’s seriously weakening his potential of ever REALLY becoming one of the “Greats.” Some of the hooks on this album are downright annoying, and it’s just all on the production side. Stop making the charts and start making real hip hop. It’s called looking forward - your career will thank you.

The song Shooter on Tha Carter II I think is proof of Lil’ Wayne diversity and originality, but I haven’t heard anything that surprising out of him in a long time. Lollipop displays clearly NO effort whatsoever. Great rapper but he’s letting himself be hampered by the industry far too much.
