Thank You Sci-Fi Channel!

friday_the_13th_the_series

This morning during my daily routine of watching another Maury update show. I don’t really hate these, but they aren’t as funny as the original episodes of say “teens gone wild”. I just really don’t care if they got their shit together, the funny part is that they DID sell their body for a double cheeseburger… But I digress. I was flipping through channels and saw that Sci-Fi Channel was showing, Friday The 13th – The Series ALL DAY!

I only got to catch one episode, but my DVR is recording another 10 or so episodes. Friday The 13th was one of my favorite shows as a kid but had  a shorter life span than a promiscuous teen girl at Camp “Blood”. This was probably because the show had NOTHING to do with the Friday The 13th movie franchise. No mention of Jason, Camp Crystal Lake, nothing! The basic premise was centered around this antique shop (Curious Goods which was on Druid Ave, Haha!) that sold these cursed objects. I don’t remember too many details besides these objects would give people some sort of desired power, that they couldn’t unleash until they committed some heinous act. Always a catch!

Of course with the magic of the internet and Wikipedia, I didn’t have to dig deep in the bowels of my mind to and give you a flawed synopsis:

“An antiques dealer named Lewis Vendredi (played by R.G. Armstrong) made a deal with the Devil to sell cursed antiques out of his shop, “Vendredi’s Antiques”, in exchange for wealth and immortality. He eventually grew tired of being the Devil’s puppet and broke the deal. The Devil came and claimed the soul of Vendredi (“Friday” in French) for breaking the deal.

After Lewis’ death, his shop was inherited by his niece, Micki Foster (played by Louise Robey) and her cousin by marriage, Ryan Dallion (played by John D. LeMay). They sold off many of the cursed antiques before being stopped by Jack Marshak (played by Chris Wiggins). Jack was Lewis’ friend, a retired world-traveller and mystic who originally collected many of the antiques for Vendredi before they became cursed.

The series follows the protagonists as they hunt down the cursed antiques, which are usually in the possession of people who have discovered their evil powers and are reluctant to give them up. Since the cursed antiques are completely indestructible, the ones that the group acquires are locked away in a vault beneath “Curious Goods,” the rechristened antique store. They use a special manifest written by Lewis as a guide as it holds the records of all the cursed objects sold.”

I’ve been itching to watch this show again for years and have just neglected searching for it on DVD. I however get the feeling that upon returning to my DVR I’m going to be mildly disappointed! This same thing happened when Sci-Fi started doing marathons of Tales from the Darkside.  Like Friday the 13th – The Show, it’s one of those shows you loved as a kid, but seeing them now you realize how cheesy they are and those “ironic twists” aren’t ironic and could be seen from a mile away. The theme song still creeps me the fuck out however!  And they did a good job with guest appearances, like having Divine star in an episode! I hadn’t realized this until the episode popped up on one of those TFTDS marathons!

no fucking way. I was obsessed with the show and I want to get the DVD set http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewproduct.htm?productId=46144867 — although I heard the transfer wasn’t great. The Tales from the Darkside box set (season 1) should be coming out soon http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewproduct.htm?productId=57539368
