“The ORIGIN of the DEMON”

Etrigan the Demon is definitely not the most well known comic book character, but his strange appearance and even weirder rhyme speak have always made him an interesting character to me. Even though Jack Kirby’s creation has remained in relative obscurity except to the most die-hard DC fans, the DEMON has still managed to pull off appearances in the Cartoon Network’s Justice League Unlimited series, and I even saw him last Friday in the new Batman: the Brave and the Bold cartoon on Cartoon Network. (not to mention his new action figure in Mattel’s DC Universe Classics line)
While I was trying to find out a little more of the Demon’s history I ran across this article on Comic Book Resources talking about how Jack Kirby (creator of the Demon), considered to be the most influential comic book artist of all time, lifted the Demons design from an old Prince Valiant comic strip. I wonder if Kirby or DC had to pay royalties?

The Demon has long been one of my favorite DC characters along with the equally strange The Creeper! I actually picked up the first issue of “The Demon” at this past SDCC just to have.
I always wished someone like Neil Gaiman or Mike Carey would perhaps take on the character for a story! He has limitless potential

yeah, read that last week. The mini-series back in the 80′s was (and still is) one of my favorite stories about Etrigan. JasonBlood needs to make more appearances! Now if they’d only reissue that and the Dr. Fate mini-series I’d be set!

Neil Gaiman Demon would get me reading a monthly book again.

I first say this character while going through the seasons of justice league/JL unlimited and from then on I’ve been a fan.
I didn’t know batman: brave and the bold had aired,in Canada we don’t get cartoon network :(. I’ll have to go DL then now. Thanks for the update.

The Creeper…man oh man. I always wondered what the deal was with that furry quasi-vest he wore. Or is it a hairy cape? Hairy Cape is great band name btw. ©me so don’t steal it.

He popped up in Sandman 2 or 3 times during Dream’s visits to hell and tried to take over when Lucifer abandoned the place.

He pops up a few times in Alan Moore’s run on Swamp Thing, most notably in the issues collected in the first trade paperback. I think Jason Blood is in there too. That trade is easily one of the best I own.
