TMNT 25th

I saw the new 25th Anniv. TMNT action figures on the shelves at Target last night and they looked great! I was so stoked when I heard they were going to re release the original series by Playmates , these toys were the genesis of my obsession with action figures and just toys in general. I only bought Raphael (he’s cool but rude!) for now, but I’ll be back to buy the other three ninja teens. No sign of Splinter or any of the Foot clan on the shelves, but the back of the blister card is an exact repro of the original cards advertising the 4 ninjas, Splinter, Casey Jones, April O’Neil, Bebop, Slash, Krang, Shredder, Foot Soldier, and Rocksteady.I really hope they re release some of my other favorites like Wingnut, Ray Fillet, and Mondo Gecko.

The only shitty thing is that the re releases are about 9 dollars, and you can get originals on eBay for that price or close to it. I browsed the TMNT 25th Anniversary site, but didn’t see anything on release dates for more figures, but it was a busy site so I may have missed it.

This past year both G.I. Joe, and He-Man got the retro treatment and now the Turtles! These companies are making me go broke! Hopefully no one re-releases the classic Toxic Avenger toys or else I’m really boned.

The original Masters of the Universe figures were retroed back in 2001 as a commemorative series. I actually had all of them except the He-Man/BattleCat box set, but I later sold them on eBay when I decided to drastically reduce my toy collection.

In regards to the TMNT retroes, I’m not really feeling that packaging or the fact that they included Slash when he wasn’t released until series 3. Casey & Krang weren’t introduced until Series 2, so what warrants them cutting Baxter, Rat King or General Tragg before jumping to Series 3.

They also changed the shape of the blister pack instead of using the awkward old design and there sure as hell wasn’t a ‘choking hazard’ warning on the original toys!

P.S. The original toys retailed for $3.94 at Wal-Mart in 1988.

    (ok, no more nerding out.)

Fuck yeah to Ninja Turtles in general. Fuck yeah to Mondo Gecko. And fuck yeah especially to Toxic Avengers.

  3. Mutant Massacre Says:

Yeah, I noticed the blister card was a bit more square looking.

Also, I didnt mean for it to sound as if the characters were the original characters offered, just the art work and layout of the card was almost exact.

  4. Mike Jones Says:

It was a personal gripe about Playmates’ decision, not what you wrote in regards to the toys.

I also bet that they’re not soft-head turtles.

the new GI Joes are sick and they brought Snake Eyes back!

  6. Mutant Massacre Says:

They don’t look soft headed. Im still debating if I should take them out of the package or not, Ill let you know if they are soft headed if I bust open the package.

    Fix yo linx.

Mondo Gecko might have been the figure I was mor jazzed about than any other. He was a party lizard in neon colors and came with his own skateboard AND stickers so you could choose his T-shirt. That was a good Christmas.

I liked when the dolls had the squishy rubber heads.

Anyone remember TMNT figures were about $4.99 when they first came out? Almost a $4 jump!

  11. pllissken Says:

Actually 4.99 in 1988 dollars equals 8.96 in 2008 dollars.

    NHL action figures are $20

Alexander Ovechkin Rare “Black Jersey” Variant Capitals McFarlane NHL Series 13 is listed at $90 on amazon.

You got to admit the Russian had an incredible rookie year. I bet he could even beat a few Ninja Turtles.
