Choice Is Yours Vol. 10

Soundgarden – Superunknown (1994)
Vs.
The Game is simple… if only one could exist which would it be? What’s more important… personal relevance, cultural significance, or simply being the better album all other things aside? Choice is yours…

Call me a child of the 90s, but this is the hardest one for me so far. Both shaped my youth equally. I gotta stay on the fence for this one.
Geek fact: If you spend a summer reading ‘The Talisman’ by Stephen King and Peter Straub, make sure you listen to equal parts Superunknown and Angel Dust by Faith No More. The songs will start to line up with the story a la, Dark Side of the Wizard of Oz.

Suoerunknown. It’s got a lot more personal history. I chose Doc’s instead of pills back then and perhaps that made the difference.
January 20th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
daft punk. i beat everyone to the punch
January 20th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
Daft Punk.
Is this even a choice?
January 20th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Daft Punk’s “Homework”…while Soundgarden did have some pretty seminal songs on “Superunknown”, I have to say that I never really felt them and could get more out of an Alice in Chains album (or Ministry). Daft Punk wins because if this album were gone, people would only know them for the guys who provided the sample for a Kanye song and that’s something that no great artist should have to be lowered to.

i was about to write how this is the first true “no contest” in Choice Is Yours history, but i forgot just how many singles superunknown had on it. i cant remember a damn thing about the album cuts though. rapidshare 2 da rescue…
January 20th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
Well… I’m all for Soundgarden, but clearly Daft Punk has had more of an influence.
January 20th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
daft punk can’t hold Soundgarden’s jock
January 20th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
This is the easiest pick for me so far (kinda a bummer); Daft Punk’s Homework.
January 20th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
uh….wow. for once I have to go with “neither”. I’ve never been a fan of Daft Punk and After “Louder than Love” I think Soundgarden fell apart.
January 20th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
HOMEWORK FTW. agree with above, is this even a question? I’ll still play ‘Rollin and Scratchin’ and ‘Oh Yeah’ when DJing.. but the only time I hear any Soundgarden is when the local shitty alt-rock station is on blast. love me some OG Chris Cornell vox, but Daft Punk has this one locked and sealed.
January 20th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
daft punk all the way
January 20th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Superunknown. Easily one of the greatest albums of all time and the creative pinnacle of the best band to emerge out of the late 80s early 90s commercial grunge scene.
January 20th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
This one is easy.
Superunknown.
I like Discovery way more than Homework, and nothing could fill the void abandoned by Superunknown. However, even if this had been Superunknown vs. Discovery, I’d still take Superunknown.
January 20th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
I would just like to point out that ever since “Homework” came out it has driven me absolutely crazy that “Da Funk” is essentially an instrumental remix of Depeche Mode’s “Never Let Me Down Again” and no one ever says so!
That and as good as “Homework” is there was nothing at all unique about it to me. It was just a really great Electro/Dance album. “Superunkown” sounded like nothing else at the time and still doesn’t. Soundgarden managed to make one of the creepiest and weirdest albums that was commercially successful when it probably shouldn’t have been.

Definitely Superunkown.. Blackhole sun music video was insane..
“spooooonmaaaaan”

Prolly: While yes as for this past decade Daft Punk has obviously had a huge influence on electronic and dance music while Soundgarden has slowly been delegated to “Remember the 90s!” weekends. But that isn’t to say it’s going to stay that way.
There’s as ton of metal bands, Doom Metal ones in particular progressing their sound, making it more commercially appealing. Torche is a really good example who are basically following what Soundgarden did. Making uncompromising yet radio friendly metal.
With so many kids getting getting back into Rock via shit like Guitar Hero and Rock Band, whose to say come 2010 that it won’t break?

As much as I liked Superunknown, Soundgarden always left a bad taste in my mouth. It must have been the time when I was hanging out in front of the Pyramid club with Richie from Underdog who was bouncing there at the time. The guitarist comes up with a couple of people and proceeds to throw his half full beer can on the floor. Richie proceeds to ask the guy to pick up his beer can and dispose of it properly. He proceeds to act all pompous and mutter under his breath like he was doing a menial task. He muttering something about knowing who he was. Richie said I don’t give a fuck who you are. Guy ended up throwing away his litter all huffy and puffy. I was actually waiting for Richie to drop the hammer on this dude but it never happened. Don’t fuck with Birkenhead.

Joel, that sounds nothing like KIm Thayil man! It’s not like he’s my good friend or anything but I did meet him once when I was 16 or 17 and he was the humblest and sweetest dude imaginable. He really made you feel special and honored to have you as a fan. Which is also how he always came off in interviews.
I can see Chris Cornell being a douche like that, but not Kim Thayil!

maybe so MtPC but everyone can have their douchy moments I guess.

Really!? I hope to the great god of creation above that you’re right about this. In my opinion, the mass marketing of “rock” via retailers has led to some of the worst fuckin’ music I’ve ever been witness to. Rock, rock radio above all, sounds about as good as the post-grunge/alternative boy-band and two-way-motorola-brand-hop scene.
There’s an alive and kicking underground scene, both in rock and hip-hop (dj-ing and emcee’n), so we could witness an explosion of good music again as we did during the late 80′s and early to mid 90′s.
…but at this pace, Choice Is Yours Vol. 50 will be pitting Nickelback’s All The Right Reasons against Akon’s Trouble.

El Gallo – you work at guitar center?

Daft Punk’s popularity is something I will never ever understand.
On the other hand, Superunknown was Soundgarden’s best album.. for me it was like grunge grew up into some sorta weird proggy thing. That said, I’d never listen to either.

superunknown… i would listen to “fourth of july” constantly.
i have this interactive disc, I think its called “alone in the superunknown” or it was the single for “fell on black days” or something, it had some crazy interactive setup/game thing going. i remember getting kinda freaked out/annoyed messing around with it.
anyone remember those interactive discs from back in the 90′s? i had a primus disc like that too…there was really cool stuff bands used to do to get our attention before the internet took all the fun out of buying music.

Soundgarden. I didn’t even listen to Daft Punk until 2000
January 21st, 2009 at 1:40 am
Hmmm i think i have to partake in this one since it features two great bands if i may call them that.
I myself followed the Grunge scene, yes even in italy we got Singles! So I am essentially going with Soundgarden as they really did mold my musical taste and they were a part of my upbringing. Put simply if i met Chris Cornell i woudl be repeating in my head (as when Slash came to a store where i worked) “Holy shit it’s Chris Cornell!”
Both of the albums in my opinion are masterpieces in their genre as i can listen to them over and over and like every song. many newer artist fail in comparison. yet i got into daft punk a little after the fact and i can’t deny that seeing them live was most definitely the best live show i have been to in my whole life. I think the only show that could top this is Maiden.

“… Da Funk is essentially an instrumental remix of Depeche Mode’s Never Let Me Down Again and no one ever says so”
That’s about as believable as the Jimi Hendrix Sex Video. There’s 3 main samples to Da Funk.
Primarily, Vaughan Mason & Crew “Bounce Rock Skate Roll” (1979)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6n6RGJTOVHE
Barry White “I’m Gonna Love You” (1973)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjBjVGc7mek
and the intro to Tata Vega “Get It Up For Love” (1979)

STOP tyring to drag Dave Gahan into everything!

I have no clue where Daft Punk took the main melodic loop for “Da Funk” from but you’re seriously going to tell me that it isn’t uncannily similar to the main synth riff of “Never let me down again”?
January 21st, 2009 at 12:24 pm
the only similarity i can discern between the two is that
Daft Punk is a French band with an English name and
Depeche Mode is an English band with a French name
the main riff… the intro at 0:08?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_dQi_OAMo8
i’m not picking it up in Da Funk. plus, looks like Warner Brothers pulled their promo videos. i think moby is fighting the youtube ban.
January 21st, 2009 at 9:33 pm
I’m going to go with getting rid of both.
February 18th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
cannot argue which is better but i been Daft Punk fan for long so i will go with daft punk no doubt about it just pure house electronic classic album but its hard to tell which album is best from daft punk i kind of like discovery alot but other also great
