Battlestar Weigh-In

A Disquiet Follows My Soul: “Galen Tyrol, you are not the father.” Does anyone else think that this isn’t such a big deal? The only significant thing it means is that little Nicholas isn’t half-Cylon and that Hot Dog managed to get laid. I do feel bad for Chief though, even if he is a toaster.

Shit is going down with Gaeta (who has quickly become one of my favorite characters during the past two seasons). He tells Starbuck that “some kind of a reckoning” is soon coming and we learn at the end of the episode how Gaeta plans to set it in motion. He expresses offensively showy bitterness towards the new alliance with the Cylons, especially in the scene where he confronts Starbuck in the rec room. At the end of that scene, after Starbuck exits, Gaeta looks around at the soldiers who just witnessed their argument and says, “Close that hatch. We need to talk.” I got chills. It’s interesting to see how Gaeta is slowly losing his humane qualities and is gradually becoming more like the Cylons he loathes. Anyone who watched the 10-part webisode series “The Face of the Enemy,” saw what Gaeta is capable of.

A lot went on concerning the Roslin and Adama relationship, including some implied boot-knocking at the end of the episode. Roslin has taken herself off her meds and refuses to return to her role in government, despite Adama’s pleas. She states that both her and Adama deserve to live like ordinary people and they should try to enjoy themselves while they still can. Adama’s failing health was front and center in a lot of scenes; popping pills, struggling just to get out of bed, and the old man can’t even brush his teeth without breaking into a sweat. Since Roslin now refuses to act as president, could it actually be Adama who is the dying leader referred to in the Pythian prophecy?

The decision by Adama to upgrade all ships with Cylon FTL technology causes a split in the Fleet. Vice President Zerek meets with the Quorom and a movement is passed which allows ships to refuse any Cylon technology and any Cylon who wishes to board. As Saul is informing Adama of this, the Fleet’s tylium refinery ship, “Hitea Kan,” is veering off course and communicating with Zerek, who urges them to not cooperate with Adama. When Adama sends some raptors to intercept, Kan jumps. Adama has Zerek arrested and bluffs him into revealing the location of Kan. Then we get a real treat with the meeting between Gaeta and Zerek who are planning a coup against Adama and the Cyon alliance. Gaeta assures Zerek that he has “enough” men in the Fleet who will follow them. Zerek is a character who I’ve always been on the fence about, but I really dig him after this episode and I look forward to seeing him and Gaeta disrupting the Fleet.
Is anyone else tired of Baltar?

I’m getting curious as to what Tigh’s view on his cylon identity is. He certainly touts his loyalty to the fleet, but at the same time how does Caprica Six’s pregnancy change things.
You raise a good point about Adama, maybe they both will die?
Also, agreed on Gaaeta, I am really interested to see where that story will go. A big mutiny on Galactica perhaps?
I’m getting tired of gut wrenching things happening to Tyrol. True all of the survivors have had it bad, but Galen especially has systematically had every aspect of his life and identity torn from him over the past two seasons. It reminds me of the O’brian must suffer and Garibaldi must suffer mindsets of the DS9 and B5 writers.
I’ve been so over baltar since the trial.

Did anyone else find it odd that during the press conference Lee obviously knew that the 5th was Ellen? I really don’t see Tigh as the type of guy to go to Adama and Lee and be “Oh hey! Guess what? Ellen was number 1! How do you like that?” I’d think if he truly believed his vision and that she was number 1 he would have kept it to himself. But I honestly still think Ellen isn’t number one… unless she’s reborn as the Six’s baby!
I’m also glad to see Zerek lead this coup! As much as I like Adama, I can completely see Zerek’s position, and I’m glad the writers don’t ever cast the characters in roles of simply good or evil, which would happen ina lmost any other sci-fi show with a similar plotline. I truly hope they keep that up even with a coup/mutiny because both sides here are neither in the right or wrong.
They live in a democracy where the two people in control of the two most important branches of government are sleeping with one another. There are no checks & balances and no one has called them on it. Adama and Roslin’s relationship is beyond inappropriate, more so now with Lee basically 3rd in line for the presidency.
I also didn’t catch all the references to Adama’s failing health. I thought he was just having a bad day. That would be interesting if he is the dying leader!

@Joe – I wish they would lay off Tyrol too. Poor bastard has nothing left except his shattered identity. I forecast a bender in his future.
@Crook – I didn’t pick up on why/how Lee knows about Ellen, but that’s a damn good point. If Saul would tell anyone in the Fleet, I think it would be Adama.
I’m sure they’re going to get into the birth of Six’s child, but I wonder if Cylon’s give birth after the usual human-span on nine months. I wonder that only because that seems like a long time to keep the time-span of the show going on. Roslin will definitely be dead by then.

I’m also upset that in two episodes so far there hasn’t been much of Helo. he was one of my favorites and along with Zerek were my picks for number 1.
Also, I’m not sick of Baltar. I think Gaius is a great character. I just wish he didn’t cut his hair. He’s much more believable in his role with long hair.
