Still Life

bernardi

Check out this awesome photo of this dude’s fridge. I wonder if he arranged it so he had all of these chic items in his fridge before he took this photograph. It sort of looks that way, right? Like he wanted to sort of self-express himself or something. His ‘Art’ is showing people what his life is in the most mundane and trivial way possible. Like maybe other ‘pieces’ in this ‘series’ of ‘art’ are a sink full of dishes, or a never-ending shelf full of soup cans. This is how he explores the boring struggle that is life. We are all just a product of our environment. Maybe there’s an essay and a black turtleneck to go with this photo…the pair joining forces to breathe even more furious life into the shame and despair that tiny pictures taken from one’s tiny life conveys about them.

Yeah. Nevermind. It’s an oil painting—a huge fucking painting—and it blows my goddamned brains out.

Jeez! I think the only place I can make out a bit of a painterly look is the metal shelves… but I still have to really look. And for a painting the lettering is perfect…. hmm. ya this is crazy

This is amazing work…but why is photorealistic painting still considered overly relevant when the subject matter is so completely mundane? Rosenquist has challenged us more in this respect. Plus, when does 26″ x 28″ constitute being considered a “huge fucking painting”? Not to say it doesn’t also “blow my goddamned brains out,” but just that I question its relevance outside of just being an example of great technique.

I’m glad other folks are into this. And of course, I’m not bummed that other-other folks are not convinced…that’s why they call it art, I guess.

As far as my reasoning for calling it ‘huge’ or claiming that it ‘blows my fucking brains out’…I don’t know. I come from a circle of artists where most of them start with printing and posters. They dabble with digital prints, work up to their first 5+ color silkscreen, and then discover the world of giclees and shit like that. IF! they decide to make the transition to paint, it’s usually acrylic and done in a fairly small format…since, well, they’re used to working with a stylus and a monitor (see: start with prints).

The fact that this guy is using ‘legitimate’ painterly materials (oils vs acrylics…I don’t buy this, btw, I just think it’s relevant in this circle) in a format that’s as-large- or larger-than-life just sort of, ahem, resonates with me.

The fact of the matter is that even if they were photos, they’d be top-notch photos. BUT! I’ve got a lot of respect for people who can decide to do something and then–exactly–do it.

In other words: the technique and patience involved with creating something like this sort of validates it for me. Add to that–almost as a bonus–the fact that I *like* the subject matter, and, well, turn off the brain and fire up the mouth.

    Anyway. Thanks for commenting. :)
