Ho-Ag This Saturday

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

hoag

This Saturday is the only scheduled 2009 show for Boston’s Ho-Ag. I’m not gonna front, I’m really lousy at talking about music, but I’m in love with these guys. Think the Melvins blended with a sci-fi B-movie. You can check out a ton of their tracks here (“Hoodoo Sea” is my jam) and if you’re in the Boston area this Saturday looking for a dope, cheap show, head over to Great Scott. Support local music and all that shit.

garfield2

Blammo! It’s the new kitten on the blog. I’m holding it down at 350, where wild things roam freely… come visit! This past Sunday was a dark and gloomy one, and inspired by the weather and our Garfield in-store exclusive tee, Ben from Passions pulled up a Garfield strip from Halloween ’89… I hate to bring this side of Garfield to light, but I have been known as a bringer of doom. Get your tissues out. (P.S.- You can save Garf. Come get the exclusive!)

Mishka x Gargamel Hedoran Mini!

Mishka x Gargamel Hedoran Mini!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Kaiju! In Japanese, “kaiju” means “strange beast,” but is often translated in English as “monster.”  Specifically, it is used to refer to a genre of Tokusatsu, one of the most popular forms of Japanese entertainment, which utilizes special effects and puppetry.  The most famous Kaiju is Godzilla. Other well known Kaiju characters include Mothra, Anguirus, Rodan, King Kong, Gamera, and King Ghidorah.

While many of you who are familiar with the wonderful world of Kaiju have already called and emailed us regularly regarding our super-limited Kaiju collaboration with Japan’s Gargamel, for those of you for whom this guy is something new, let us enlighten you a little on Hedoran. Hedoran is one of many characters created in the 1970′s as a bootleg to the classic Godzilla smog-monster, Hedorah! (You know us and bootlegs!)

Review: A-Trak – Infinity +1

a-track-infinity1

A-TrakInfinity +1 (2009) [Fools Gold] // Grade: B+

If you care anything about hip-hop OR dance music, then you’re most likely familiar with wunderkid DJ A-Trak, the jet-setting blogger/sandwich lover. Over the last few years, he’s made a name for himself remixing tracks, djing around the world (you already know he was Kanye’s dj, duh) and as co-owner of Fools Gold Records. His last two mixes, Dirty South Dance & Running Man, were both fantastic albums that captured the essence of the indie club scene at the time and now after just wrapping up a promotional tour, he brings us Infinity +1.

While the tracks on Dirty South Dance accurately reflected it’s title (hip-hop bangers with a discotheque twist), Infinity +1 is a rollin’ & scratchin’ voyage through the time traveling portals of electro and dance. This is what I imagine you’d hear in the phone booth from Bill & Ted’s if they had been modern day blog house dorks and not late 80s surf burn outs. The only exception to this vibe is near the beginning of the mix, where Treezy subtly shifts through a few bar-infused rap numbers. Ironically (I listen to WAY to much rap) this is my least favorite part of the mix, although it does do an excellent job at diversifying the mix without hampering the flow.

Despite it’s 21 track, hour long run time, this mix plays out at a blazing pace, cruising seamlessly through a selection of tracks that are just as at home in the club as they are on your headphones while in the midst of the workday. I found myself oblivious to the fact that I’d been working for an hour as I wondered why I didn’t get off my ass to catch A-Trak at his recent Studio B date here in Brooklyn (Oh yeah, I was hungover from the Mishka Grand Opening party).

Just as the opening tracks are a comforting introduction to this never-ending journey, the last few tracks segue into the closing piece, a lulling guitar driven number by electro/folk musician James Yuill. The first few times I listened to this mix, I was caught off guard by this, but after REALLY listening to the mix as a whole, I couldn’t ask for a better ending.

Vince Shlomi, my favorite informercial pitchman, known for his ShamWow and SlapChop ads and Looney Tune-like demeanor, was arrested last month for beating the shit out of a hooker. How this stayed under the radar for so long, I dunno, but Smoking Gun just broke the story:

Shlomi, 44, was arrested last month on a felony battery charge following a violent confrontation with a prostitute in his South Beach hotel room. According to an arrest affidavit, Shlomi met Sasha Harris, 26, at a Miami Beach nightclub on February 7 and subsequently retired with her to his $750 room at the lavish Setai hotel. Shlomi told cops he paid Harris about $1000 in cash after she “propositioned him for straight sex.” Shlomi said that when he kissed Harris, she suddenly “bit his tongue and would not let go.” Shlomi then punched Harris several times until she released his tongue.

What a testy hooker! Good thing the ShamWow can soak up three gallons of blood! Looks like Vince took a good beating, but in a classic case of “you should see the other guy…” well, you should really see the other guy. Check out mugs of what’s left of the hooker here. She looks like something from Nightbreed. Vince Shlomi is the Chris Brown of johns.
