New Comicbook Day #4

goon-32

The Goon #32 by Eric Powell
In the 10th anniv. issue of the Goon, the Goon’s pals throw him a birthday party but he’s not in the mood to celebrate. Only one thing can get the Goon’s juices flowing and that’s beating up on the evil cannibal Hobo king and leaving him at the entrance of Lonely Street for the zombies to finish him off. The second half of the issue has some Goon sketches by famous artist types and a letters column detailing Eric Powell’s trip to France.

solomongrundy1

Solomon Grundy#1 by Scott Kolins
Green Lantern Alan Scott and the Phantom Stranger are on the trail of Cyrus Gold hoping to put the curse of Solomon Grundy to rest once and for all. Cyrus is given one last chance for redemption by tracking down the murder weapon, the man who murdered him and showing forgiveness. Sounds easy enough right? Alan Scott brings Gold back to Slaughter Swamp in search of the weapon, but Alan Scott is ambushed by an unseen force and Gold is eaten by alligators (or Crocodiles) and resuurects a day later as Solomon Grundy. Grundy is still set on completing Cyrus’ task until the Demon Etrigan shows up! The two engage in a huge fight which results in the destruction of a bridge and killing  all the people on it. Oh, and the Phantom Stranger mentioned something about Grundy needing to complete his task before “The Blackest Night” whatever that means. Bizarro makes an appearence at the end that will surely lead to a  Grundy/Bizarro throwdown next issue!

Madman Atomic Comics #14 by Mike Allred, Darwin Cooke & J. Bone

I love Madman, I love it when he’s fighting robots or trying to figure out his place in the universe and interacting with mutant beatniks. In this issue, Frank Einstien (Madman) goes on a hike, with his girlfriend Joe. Thats it. Oh, and he gets shot by a hunter but is patched up,no problem. The back up story by Darwyn Cooke and J.Bone is a little more entertaining. Joe and Frank are at an amusement park when Frank stumbles upon a movie set for a film about Madman! Crazy hijinks ensue when the director mistakes Frank for the stunt body for the star of the Madman movie who has a normal sized head and chisled jaw but a small, baby sized body.

War of Kings #1 by Abnett, Lanning & Pelletier

Just when you thought the mega-Crisis-Invasion-war events were over at Marvel, they hit us with another one, War of Kings. I saw the Previews solicitations for this and there are a ton of spin off titles , ugh. In the first issue  The Inhuman’s Crystal is getting married to Ronan the Accuser, ruler of the Kree, to unite their respective families together and place the Inhumans at the top of the Kree royalty. Shiar ruler, and the newly invented brother of Cyclops and Havok, Vulcan sees this wedding as the perfect opportunity to strike at the heart of the Kree empire and further expand his rule over the galaxy. Vulcan and his royal guard use a suicide bomber to destroy the Kree’s force field generator, and the Shiar launch their attack on the Kree outer worlds and the wedding. There is a huge battle, Lilandra (the disposed ruler of the Shiar and now a Starjammer) is kidnapped, Ronan appears to be mortally wounded, and almost everyone dies. King Black Bolt makes it through the battle and through his wife, Medusa, declares that the Shiar will pay for what they have done with blood!

Superman: World of New Krypton #1 by Robinson, Rucka & Woods

I’ve actually really enjoyed James Robinson’s recent stint as writer on Superman, and his new World of New Krypton story seems just as promising. In this first issue Superman leaves earth and travels to New Krypton, which is now orbiting exactly opposite of earth around the sun. Once Superman arrives, he meets with his aunt Alura, they try and put their mistrust behind them and Superman agrees to become a fullfledged citizen of New Krypton. This means he must choose a guild, his mother was Labor Guild until she married his father Jor-El who was Science Guild… Alura tells Kal-El he can choose any guild he wishes.  But before he decides, he takes a trip to see General Zod, leader of the Kryptonian Military. After showing Zod’s punk ass military dudes he isn’t to be messed with by laying the smack down on Non (Superman has had his powers much longer than any one else on New Krypton). Supes then has a short conversation with Zod in which he tries to convince The Man of Steel to join the military. Superman then returns to his aunt Alura and informs her that he will not be apart of any guild, which she isn’t too happy to hear! She then informs him that if he refuses to choose a guild that she’ll choose one for him, and does. Say hello to Commander El, of the New Kryptonian Military!

There were a lot of new books this week, more synopsis to follow.

Solomon Grundy has always been one of my favorite characters but I really, really hated the story, along with the artwork — that reminds me of McGuinness who I despise. No Hero was good – short as always but good. Dead Irons #2 was also good, much better this time around since there was actual dialog. This series will be a re-read once all of ‘em are out. Zombies that ate the world – not bad. I think I had more hopes for this one and I’ll wait to see where it goes but Guy Davis’ artwork helps carry this story along.

  2. Rockburn Says:

Interesting post. I have always had Madman in my box, I have to go pick up world of new Krypton now!

  3. Toilet Cobra Says:

Madman was my favorite comic since the age of eleven. It feels wrong to see the Image comics logo on it. Also I think the comic became really boring. I really loved the first ten or eleven issues before Allred took what seemed like a five year hiatus from Madman.

    Kingsnake-

I respect you’re opinion on Grundy, but your nuts!! Haha! I love McGuinness’s artwork, and I really like Scott Kolins art also.
