I finally got my hands on a copy of Killzone 2 this afternoon and Modern Warfare was returned to the shelf for the first time in a year and a half. After playing this game for about an hour now I have to admit it’s a pretty tight package. Even though I never got a chance to play the original I was always drawn to the fact that it swayed away from the standard alien FPS and was devoid of corny laser rifles, teleporters and all of the other Treky garbage usually associated with the genre.

What Killzone 2 does deliver is gritty, dark environments, believable lead spewing weapons, a decent story (thus far), and of course, 32 person multiplayer filled with expansive boards and hot death. If you’re used to COD then this game will strike you as a little bit more of an arcade shooter, i.e. tougher to drop enemies and a little faster paced.

Ok, I’m not going to lie: This game is sick, but COD 4 still has my heart. I waited over fifteen years for a first person shooter done well set in the present day where I was given the opportunity to don an M4 filled with full metal jackets and mow down terrorists (even though I’m Canadian and couldn’t give a fuck less about freedom fries). COD 4: Modern Warfare is the closest thing to perfection I’ve played and if Killzone 2 is what I get as a page holder between now and Modern Warfare 2′s release, then so be it. Killzone 2 is still pretty rad.
