Review: Boredoms – Super Roots 10

Boredoms – Super Roots 10 (2009) [Commons] // Grade: A+
The Boredoms return with their 10th installment to the Super Roots series. Super Roots 10 is not only their best and most engaging Super Roots to date, but quite possibly the most satisfying Boredoms release I’ve had the pleasure of hearing in a long time.
With the exception of the “Super Rooy” intro track, Super Roots 10, like most other Super Roots releases is made up of one track, “Ant 10″ and remixes of it. Starting with the Boredoms own trippy tribal version, it’s subsequent remixes steadily build upon one another until they climax halfway through DJ Lindstrom’s remix. The good vibes are then carried into Altz’s finale, making the last 20 minutes of Super Roots 10 a feelgood dance freak-out bar none! If you ever imagined what it would sound like had Giorgio Moroder produced Can, those final two tracks may just be it.
As Super Roots 10 treads back and forth over patches of the same path in it’s 40 minutes, it never sounds the same even on multiple listens. There’s always some new nuance you pick up on subsequent listens, which as always is something the Boredoms excel at. But more importantly, Super Roots 10, the remixes in particular bring back the sort of playfulness that was integral to earlier Boredoms releases… It’s that certain something that’s been painfully absent from their ever-evolving sound for some time.
