Peter Brady

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

I just spent two hours on the phone trying to convince my best friend from high school to check into rehab (again). During this plea, I drank two 40s of Private Stock, so I’m one to talk. But the malt liquor memories greased the gears of high school nostalgia and when that occurs, Screeching Weasel inevitably materializes. I’ve done my best to avoid posting random YouTube videos thus far, so forgive my slip tonight and just enjoy this song, it still rules.

Do you know Mandy Morbid?

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

mandy

You might know Mandy from the Mishka 2009 calendar and Tshirt were she dressed up as Tank Girl.  You may know her from Stagg Street, as I posted a new set of her yesterday in her red bra.  But if this is your first time meeting her she is about 5 feet tall and has real 28FF boobs.  She is super cute  with her mohawk and tattoos and tiny size 4 feet.  She is one of my favorite models and I can’t wait to get back to LA to shoot her more.

LIghtning Bolt! Lightning Rod!

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

OK I have to admit I’m totally clueless to who Homeboy Sandman is and I’m sure I’m probably pretty late to this BUT… Our own Miguel (aka Scoop) and product model Steve (see the tall side banner or visit our webstore) are in this video and it’s kind of transfixing.

Street Carnage has just done a great write up on the Newmore Switchblades phenomenon.

The whosa, whatsa!?? Basically, it’s a collective tour of like-minded party animals featuring Ninjasonik, Cerebral Ballzy, Team Robespierre, The Death Set & Totally Michael. There isn’t a bad band in the bunch!

Be sure to check out their tour blog. Also a big thank you to all the bands on tour for the amount of love they’ve been showing us! Every site’s SXSW coverage always has someone decked out in something from Mishka.

Oh Shit… The Obama Deception!

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

So I’ve found my new favorite movie genre… Documentary Sci-Fi, which I now share with you. Hell It even sounds like it has a John Carpenter score at times!

P.S. Watch for the ever so subtle secular vs. religion sub-plot.

P.P.S. Totally could have used an editor.

P.P.P.S. Greg, Ron, Jones… watch this, you’ll like it. \/\/1|_|_  8|_0\/\/  Y4 /\/\1|\|d5!

Deep In The Heart of Texas

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

texas

Everywhere I looked down in Austin I saw someone sporting Mishka this SXSW!  Austin is booming and I am proud since that is my main home base and where I spent half my childhood. So for those out-of-towners who come down for SX, maybe next time take some time after your I <3 Comix/ Mad Decent parties and get a lil deeper into our Texas Capitol City. These are just a few cool things about Austin you can do too.

bats2

This is a flock of BATS not birds.  Every night from Mid March til November 1.5 million of  these Mexican free-tail critters fly out at every sunset and return by mornings light to back up under the bridge over Town Lake where they ‘hang’ out.

hippiehollowteezoom2

No tan lines! All kinds of people are lying around in the sun nekkid down at the lake.

drafthouse1

Then there is the Alamo Drafthouse downtown where you can see movies for free and order from a full menu right from your seat and get everything from Jalapeno poppers to home made vodka while watching cult classics and oddities such as Demons 2, Blood Diner, Monty Python’s Holy Grail quote along, and …well, just check the calendar…

I even noticed the Drafthouse advertising this L’amour Supreme print, originally used for the Datapop T-shirt, for the upcoming Datapop party in Austin which celebrates the music of Nintendo and other 8 bit  music. (insert visual of Ogre from ‘Revenge of the Nerds’ screaming  ”NerRrRds!!”  here)

I’m moving back to Austin.

The Kid Has Big Balls! (and a 60 ft cock)

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

huge-cock

A little gift for the ladies, and ladies at heart, as my first posting and in honor of Mishka’s new girl’s line!  Sorry it’s not a real cock but it’s a cute story anyway. And, you know, if you want to see realistic images, just insert ‘cock’ into Google and you’ll find thousands… for free.

Little blurb about it here…

http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/newsbeat/newsid_7961000/7961224.stm

An 18-year-old has secretly painted a 60ft drawing of a phallus on the roof of his parents’ £1million mansion in Berkshire. It was there for a year before his parents found out. They say he’ll have to scrub it off when he gets back from travelling.

Norman Saunders Trading Cards

Friday, March 27th, 2009

norman3

I buy a lot of shit. Like a LOT of shit. Shit that I convince myself I need. Toys. Clothes. Books. Art. Stuff. I trade/cut deals/save up/acquire sparingly whenever possible, but in a very large way, my life is about defining my tastes by way of surrounding myself with cool shit. Collectophilia or something.

Anyway…I’ve been in love with a new purchase lately…a set of Norman Saunders trading cards produced by Illustration Magazine. The cards themselves are whatever, but the artwork they depict and the legacy they *hint* at is truly something to lose yourself in.

norman1

Saunders’ work is so totally ubiquitous that even if you have absolutely no idea who Norman Saunders is, if you’re reading the Bloglin, you’ve seen it. He’s like the Norman Rockwell of girls, ghouls, aliens, and, well, cards. Mars Attacks. Wacky Packs. The guy that inspired the guy that inspired the guy who created Garbage Pail Kids, Madballs, Rat Fink…you name it. This guy painted it.

norman2

Anyway…just wanted to share the love. His son did an awesome write-up in Illo #2 which is currently in reprint and available from their site (also a great Frazetta writeup for all you dragon slayers). You can also get the set of cards for about 15 bucks…which is a steal. To boot! There’s also a coffee-table book available which I don’t have but which is sure to be awesome. Know it or not, this guy is a big part of whatever you want to call this thing that we’re all doing together, and I couldn’t be happier to sit and flip through these like little life-lesson flash cards.

Posse’s On Broadway!

Friday, March 27th, 2009

garfmishka

So it kind of slipped all of our minds that we never took photographs of the 4 exclusive tees that are currently available only at our 350 Broadway shop. We really wanted to do a couple of tourist trap style tees for Brooklyn, you know the kind you always hope you’ll find but never actually do? Well this is the first of them and my personal favorite… Gothfield, Big, Fat, Hairy Deal!

swampmop

Here we have Lamour Supreme’s rendition of our Bear mop as Swamp Thing! A full color version of this is coming out this summer, but Lamour’s line work is so amazing we had to do a black & white version of it also. Those of you who have never read Alan Moore’s run on Swamp Thing, well get on it!

mishkajcool

This is the second of our bootleg tourist trap style tees. Gotta have a Joe Cool to go along with Garfield… Posse’s on Broadway!

boogietee

And finally there’s Lamour Supreme’s concept sketch for our Mishka x Cure Boogieman. I think this tee is right up John Katehis’ alley!

And don’t forget all of the exclusive New Eras & Snapbacks!

theresa

Drop by this weekend and be sure hello to Theresa, loveliest streetwear shop clerk in all the land!

Review: Lotus Plaza – The Floodlight Collective

Friday, March 27th, 2009

KRANK129_11183_LOTUS.indd

Lotus PlazaThe Floodlight Collective (2009) [Kranky] // Grade: C+

I feel bad for Lockett Pundt… perpetually stuck behind Bradford Cox’s (his bandmate in Deerhunter) shadow. In his first solo outing under the Lotus Plaza moniker it’s clear that Deerhunter is not a one man show and that Pundt not only has a profound influence on Cox, but is just as responsible for their success as his more heralded bandmate. But what is also quite abundantly clear on The Floodlight Collective is that he also needs Bradford Cox as a collaborator to reach his creative potential. Which is a shame because not only do I like rooting for an underdog, but because Cox already proved that he could hold his own going solo (Atlas Sound).

While it is not without it’s strong moments (“Sunday Night” is a great one), The Floodlight Collective goes nowhere… you know how each song will end as soon as it begins. Great Shoegaze should be hopelessly romantic, swallowing you whole in it’s sound, emotion and attention to small details… It should NOT simply be pretty music to fall asleep to, which unfortunately is exactly what this is. The Floodlight Collective just sits there being pretty, unengaging and without purpose. But most of all it just mainly makes me wish I had put on a Deerhunter album instead.
