Мишка Presents Keep Watch Vol. VIII: Plastician

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

kw8frontpage-1

This month’s Keep watch comes courtesy of another Croydon, London alumni – Plastician brings us this month’s mix – a compilation of his favorite Dubstep and Grime tracks from the past year. Hits from the likes of Rusko, Skream and Crissy Criss, along with many others makes this month’s Dubstep-heavy installment the perfect part mix for the start of spring. Enjoy.

Plastician has been rocking the UK underground for 8 years now and has been seen all over Europe as well as North America. His recent induction into a BBC Radio 1 slot really is a testament to his popularity in the scene, complimented by his ongoing Rinse FM show at 11pm on Monday evenings and his infamous May Mixes (new one dropping soon). Plastician still finds the time to run his own label Terrorythm Recordings and just released his new album “Beg to Differ.”

Vintage Mr. T Wax Museum Figure

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

mrtwax

When people have asked me what I don’t have Mr.T related, or what am I looking for, I always tell them a Mr.T Wax Museum figure. My friend Mike Essl sent me the link earlier today from liveauctioneers.com

Unfortunately (or fortunately) this is a pretty poor example of a wax Mr. T. Which is probably a good thing cause I dont have $3K to drop. Hrmm, although, maybe I can convince My Pal The Crook that we need this for the Mishka store.

You check out the auction here.

WOAH, ok I totally didn’t notice the post below about the Seinfeld figures. Oh well.

Jerry, sometimes I just don’t know…

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Got a couple extra thousand dollars to spend at the Jerk Store? Now available for auction, a quartet of your favorite jerks (as well as a bunch of other half-assed wax figures, like Tiger Woods and Leo Dicraprio) from the Hollywood Wax Museum collection. Just realistic and (barely) recognizable enough to provide maximum creep-out.

Review: Tinted Windows – Tinted Windows

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

tintedwindows

Tinted WindowsTinted Windows (2009) [EMI] // Grade: C

Why the hell am I reviewing this after in the midst of an onslaught of doom metal & lo-fi albums? Why not! I was pretty fuckin’ curious to hear what a band featuring James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins), Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne), Bun E. Carlos (Cheap Trick) being fronted by Taylor Hanson, of well, Hanson would sound like. Plus the initial disgust of co-workers and my girlfriend at their debut single only made me that much more curious. “You have to hear how bad this sounds” was what I kept hearing up until I was sat down and shown the debut video for “Kind of a Girl”. Which at the end of I just scratched my head and said “This is what you think is so awful? This is just straight up Power-Pop.”

Tinted Windows is unoffensive, unremarkable, over-produced yet still catchy paint by numbers Power-Pop. A little bit of Cheap Trick, some Foreigner, a lot of Matthew Sweet & a smidgen of Nelson-esque rock balladry dumbed down (yes even Power-Pop could be dumbed down) for Disney Channel Tweenagers. This is a top heavy album of 5 or so tracks that like it or not can worm there way into the back of your head waiting to come out when you’re really drunk and a cab’s radio is tuned to z100. Is that really that bad? I guess that depends on how seriously you take your Power-Pop and or hate for anything blatantly mainstream.  If I had an 11 year old, I’d rather they got into some 3rd rate Power-Pop like rather than any number of other crappy things on the radio or TV.

So is this album any good? I wouldn’t go so far as saying that, but it has given me some guilty pleasures for the Summer and for Karaoke so it is a success in that regard, and I couldn’t ask for any more from commercial pop.

Friday May, 1st Mishka Presents Surkin @ Pacha Night Club!

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

pacha

This Friday, May 1st
Mishka in association with Pacha NYC presents…

The Pacha debut of…
SURKIN

Along with
TROUBLE & BASS DJ’S (Star Eyes & The Captain)
JDH & DAVE P (Fixed NYC)
DJ AYRES (T&A Records / The Rub)
DANCES WITH WHITE GIRLS
MICHAEL MEDS (Microprobes/Ruff Club NYC)
S$MALL CHANGE (Pure Fire / No Parking On The Dancefloor)

The pint-sized French phenom may have skipped high school, but he’s already made a career for himself as one of France’s biggest rising stars. Pacha NYC proudly presents Surkin on Friday May 1st, 2009. As a former four-to-the-floor hater, Surkin got into dance music through Detroit ghettotech and thanks to the internet started to dig deeper into club music history focusing on Miami Bass and big room Chicago house. Add a thick layer of glammed-up filtered house courtesy of French dons Daft Punk and youíve got the full Surkin mille-feuilles.

In May 2006, Parisian label Institubes released not one, but two Surkin records at once, ìGhetto Obsessionî and ìRadio Fireworks.î The response was tremendous, played and playlisted by everybody from the Ed Banger and Erol Alkan cabal to Boys Noize and Laidback Luke. Those tracks even managed to break the indie dance glass ceiling by smashing main rooms all over the globe. Radio Fireworks emerged as a genuine club hit, topping both Justiceís AND Myloís “Best tracks of 2006″ lists.

Surkin, with his first album due out in October is still riding high of his latest EP, ìNext of Kinî featuring the mega hit, “White Knight Two,” that just made Mixmagís top 100 tracks list of 2008. Add to that a Mixmag cover featuring him alongside NYC favorites The Martinez Brothers and Dubstep king Skream (naming them the “New School” of dance,) Pacha NYC together with Surkin will be exploring a whole new genre of dance music that is growing ever so quickly. Joining Surkin is the latest crop of NYC talent, Trouble & Bass DJ’s (The Captain & Star Eyes), JDH & Dave P (Fixed NYC), Michael Meds (Ruff Club), Dances With White Girls, DJ Ayres (The Rub) and Small Change (Pure Fire).

FREE BEFORE MIDNIGHT! Get on the list!

CHECK OUT THE SURKIN MINI-SITE for guestlist, info, lineup, 2 free downloads, and more!

Review: Zoroaster – Voice of Saturn

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

voice-of-saturn

ZoroasterVoice of Saturn (2009) [Terminal Doom] // Grade: B+

Holy shit. Someone got Sleep back together and killed off the members of Zoroaster! Well not really, but that’s what most this album sounds like. Since Dog Magic, the Southern boys in Zoroaster have been perfecting the formula for the perfect doom record. This formula consists of melodic and soothing tracks immediately followed by huge, gargantuan and heavy masterpieces like “Spirit Molecule” and “White Dwarf”. Listen carefully in “White Dwarf” for Brent Hinds of Mastodon’s handy-work. Also be sure to catch the hidden track on “Lamen Of The Master Therion” around 6:20.

Overall Zoroaster has created a great album that will most likely mark a highpoint in the band’s career. It’s heads above their self-titled release and Dog Magic and it’ll be interesting to see how their sound evolves in the future.
