I Used To be Straight Edge.

picture-12

We all know someone in our circle that has at one point or continues to be straight edge. And I’m very sure, we all at some point have or continue to razz the shit out of them. And let’s be honest, being sXe is kinda saying “I’m boring and I like to be boring and I’m ok with that.” We, as non-sXe, accept them for that social flaw because well, when it comes to jokes, they are low-hanging fruit.   Most of the time, their lifestyle choice is to avoid “acting like an idiot” which in turn makes them really thin skinned.  That’s why they are fun to have around; everyone needs someone to shit on.

Contrastingly I have a  straight edge friend who believe it or not, is really fun. In fact, I’m pretty sure if he were hopped up on a couple lines of coke and a few pints of beer, he’d probably be that guy that becomes the liability at the party.  It’s better for all of us, that he remains stone sober.

Same with my brother.  He doesn’t own the sXe title.  He just chooses not to drink or smoke or do drugs.  And again, it’s probably for the better (he’s a shaved-headed Asian, that wants to be a cop, likes guns and was bullied in highschool).

But the difference between them and most straight edgers is they’re not into that whole Jehovah’s Witness bullshit of being straight edge. They’re never at the bar condemning everyone else for drinking or smoking or shooting speedballs. In fact, they’re pretty much the opposite – encouraging everyone else to try and out-do each other. They’re pretty tollerable when it comes to  sXe dudes.

However, these guys? Not so much.

as a self proclaimed cool straight edge dude, i’m pretty sure that militant “edge break? face break!” aspect has disappeared by and large. i definitely haven’t encountered it in an incredibly long time. choosing not to drink/smoke/etc is a completely personal and individual choice, so judging anyone for their choice is useless.

I am not nor have I ever been edge. When I was still going to shows I used to say that the only true straight edge kids are the ones who had drank and done drugs and stopped. The reason being that those people had an idea of what they were giving up and hadn’t just formed an opinion of it based on what they’ve been told or how they may have seen some drunk people act a few times. This reasoning also makes the idea that some 12 year old is proud of being straight edge kind of ridiculous and explains how so many people break edge within a year of being able to drink. We’ve all seen it we all know it’s true.

Personally I think edge is great for people with addictive personalities (I’ve known a few who were edge for that reason) or people who have drank and done drugs before and just decided its not for them. Then again, my favorite edge friends have always been the kind that you don’t know are edge because they don’t flaunt it. They x up if there hand has to get marked at a show and if someone asks them they’ll say they are edge but otherwise they don’t give a fuck if you are or not or if you drink or don’t.

“So I first was introduced to the term straight edge from my brother when i was 5th grade or something when I didn’t understand why he was drawing all these x’s on his hands.”

5th grade? what do you know about NOT being straight-edge??

For the record: I’m never one of those people that are adverse to peoples life decisions. Want to never drink from age 15 onwards? Be my guest. Want to rub cocaine on your asshole and drink a texas mickey of Jack? I’m all for it.

I just find it really enjoyable to poke fun at a lot of sXe kids because…well…like I said, they are so thin skinned. And it’s usually the ones that really love to own that label that get all worked up. It’s almost like their own personal reasons aren’t good enough and they have to concoct a really zealous reason for everyone to understand why they chose to do something so abnormal like abstaining from alcohol or booze.

Because don’t you know? Maintaining sobriety is very anti-social behavior.
