Choice Is Yours Vol. 24

Michael Jackson – Thriller (1982)
Vs.

Prince & The Revolution – Purple Rain (1984)
The Game is simple… if only one could exist which would it be? What’s more important… personal relevance, cultural significance, or simply being the better album all other things aside? Choice is yours…

jebus i think my head is going to explode….. i’m gonna go with Prince on this one only based on the fact that i thought Off the Wall was better then Thriller., thus Purple Rain > Thriller. Still this one is tough as hell
April 28th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
Thriller. Hands down. End of story.
April 28th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
I guess I’ll go with Purple Rain.
April 28th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
The inside cover of Thriller has michael with a baby tiger, Thriller obviously.
April 28th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
Def michael, plus he looks sexy on tht pic :]
April 28th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
Thriller.
April 28th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Thriller.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
The Ghost of Vincent Price has spoken.
Thriller.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
oh man I gotta go with kiddie toucher on this one. Michael laid down some seriously classic tracks on Thriller. not to mention I remember rocking the Thriller glove in pre school.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Purple Rain is better. It just is. I hate to say it, because Thriller is amazing. If we went song for song, I think Thriller may win ( Wanna be Startin’ Somethin’ pwns almost every song ever written), but as a whole ALBUM, Purple Rain is better.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
Prince is the hipster Michael Jackson
April 28th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
doesn’t anyone find it odd that both artists are whiteified, effeminate black singers?
oh yeah, Thriller BTW.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
Prince is one of my favorite all-time artist, and I think that man is a fuckin’ beast, but other than MPtC suggestion, I cannot fathom anyone picking Purple Rain over Thriller.
Has anyone actually heard these albums!? Purple Rain can’t even hold its own in Prince’s catalogue.
Thriller; no comparison.
April 28th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
purple rain

I think I gotta go with MJ on this one, even though I feel myself entering a very Prince-heavy time. Off the Wall is better than Thriller (word life @ eric), which made it a closer call, but for me, it’s still Thriller.
I think what it comes down to is that “Thriller” and “Wanna Be Startin Somethin” are two of the best pop songs ever. EVERRRRR. Plus, “P.Y.T.” is just a hell of a lot of fun. “Darling Niki” and “When Doves Cry” are both about as awesome as “P.Y.T.” but that’s where it stops.
On title tracks alone, Thriller takes it.
[if you’re interested in reading more about Off The Wall, you should peep the blog post I made a couple weeks ago: http://dasteamwerkmusik.blogspot.com/2009/04/shippers-slept-on-michael-jackson-off.html
(sorry for the self-promo)

Thriller FTW!
April 28th, 2009 at 7:52 pm
Purple Rain.
April 28th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
We almost won The Jackoff in Vegas – and most of the songs we chose were from Thriller. No karaoke places have Prince nights, not because he’s not amazing, but because he’s the king’s little bother when it comes to pop music. So, yeah… Thriller
April 29th, 2009 at 1:30 am
Thriller because of Thriller.
April 29th, 2009 at 3:25 am
PURPLE RAIN
April 29th, 2009 at 4:28 am
Sorry I dunno, I never understood 1 M. jackson song, Thriller? ok conceptually it has something if u are a dork, but emotionally? …nothing. Purple Rain for a true tortured artist.

Prince. Jackson’s contribution to music is nominal and played up more thanks to the boom in music vids. Prince is a musician – plays guitar, keyboard, sings, writes, produces, etc. Jackson’s only instrument that he plays is some child’s skin flute,

This is a really tough one for me, since I have such emotional and cultural attachment to both. But, since Thriller was the 1st piece of music I ever bought by and for myself, I will go with MJ on this one.

PURPLE RAIN!!!!!!!!!!

i feel as though prince and mike had a major impact on American music. aside from their skills as artists, i believe that their individuality and stage presents created a template for future artists to follow. between prince with his habit for breaking les pauls across the floor at more shows than i have hairs, and mike with his super stardom and scandals [wheather negetive or positive],they have both created the ever so popular rock star mentality that many artist carry today. if i had to choose one though i believe it would be mike, personally because he supplied my family’s ears with music for the last like 30 odd years. sorry price
April 29th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
Jesus, toughest one yet. I have to go with Thriller, I listened to that record (vinyl) a ton when I was a kid.
April 29th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Both good, but thriller is just a tad bit better.
April 29th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
Thriller, but shout out to Minnesota

MPTC: MJ is the hipster James Brown.

hardest choice is yours ever….
Prince is a GOD (for evidence watch him at work with Tom Petty covering a classic! watch from 3:30 to the end http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifp_SVrlurY )
Prince is imo the best guitar player alive. there may be others that are more technical and can play faster, but the purple one plays with so much emotion and feeling, it’s insane.
I had to give Prince all those props, cuz although i’m choosing THILLER…… Prince > MJ

Purple Rain cause you know the Crushed Velvet gotta match the Honda.
April 30th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
Thriller.
