Digging For Fire Vol. 44: Phantasm Original Movie Soundtrack

phantasm

Before they turned into Jock Rock comps, Horror movies used to have actual soundtracks. Soundtracks that were composed with the film in mind and as integral to the experience as the main antagonist . Goblin’s soundtrack to Suspiria is a commonly celebrated example of this, but it is hardly the only one.

Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm is not only one of my favorite Horror films series, but has a pretty wicked soundtrack to boot. Composed by Fred Myrow & Malcom Seagrave, this suspenseful score perfectly captures not only the the grave robbing, inter-dimensional horror that is Phantasm but that distinct exhuberence and ambitious nature of 1970s synth based music. Think of it as The Tall Man, The Balls, The Dwarves & Giorgio Moroder.

If you’ve never seen the film, do so. It’s one of those overlooked Horror greats that leaves a lot of the story and motives to mystery and is delightfully very 70s. This soundtrack includes not only the score to the original 1979 film, but 4 tracks from the superior 1988 sequal which has sadly never made it to DVD.

hipstergrifter

Oh man, this is one of the greatest news articles I read in a while! So this girl Kari Ferrell aka “The Hipster Grifter,” spent some time around Greenpoint and Wlliamsburg convincing men to go home with her, then making up stories about working for the company that owns Cochella, telling them she has cancer, and then scamming them out of a lot of money.

I thought it was interesting that she always used her real name, so when dudes got suspicious they just googled her and found out that she was wanted in Salt Lake City. I think some of the best parts of the story include the note she passed to a guy at Union Pool (with the quote above), the fact that she instantly got a job at Vice, and the idea that when she lived in Utah she lived in a “straight-edge house.”

You need to read the full story HERE.

BTW- Naked pics of  Kari Ferrell HERE.

I Used To be Straight Edge.

Friday, April 17th, 2009

picture-12

We all know someone in our circle that has at one point or continues to be straight edge. And I’m very sure, we all at some point have or continue to razz the shit out of them. And let’s be honest, being sXe is kinda saying “I’m boring and I like to be boring and I’m ok with that.” We, as non-sXe, accept them for that social flaw because well, when it comes to jokes, they are low-hanging fruit.   Most of the time, their lifestyle choice is to avoid “acting like an idiot” which in turn makes them really thin skinned.  That’s why they are fun to have around; everyone needs someone to shit on.

Contrastingly I have a  straight edge friend who believe it or not, is really fun. In fact, I’m pretty sure if he were hopped up on a couple lines of coke and a few pints of beer, he’d probably be that guy that becomes the liability at the party.  It’s better for all of us, that he remains stone sober.

Same with my brother.  He doesn’t own the sXe title.  He just chooses not to drink or smoke or do drugs.  And again, it’s probably for the better (he’s a shaved-headed Asian, that wants to be a cop, likes guns and was bullied in highschool).

But the difference between them and most straight edgers is they’re not into that whole Jehovah’s Witness bullshit of being straight edge. They’re never at the bar condemning everyone else for drinking or smoking or shooting speedballs. In fact, they’re pretty much the opposite – encouraging everyone else to try and out-do each other. They’re pretty tollerable when it comes to  sXe dudes.

However, these guys? Not so much.

Review: Pet Shop Boys – Yes

Pet Shop BoysYes (2009) [Astrelwerks] // Grade: B-

If you’ve read the Bloglin regularly I’m sure you may have noticed I’m a pretty huge fan of Synth-Pop. And while I have been feverishly awaiting the release of Depeche Mode’s Sounds of the Universe (out next week), I was pretty lukewarm to the prospects of a The Pet Shop Soy’s new album. I’m glad that curiosity finally got the better of me.

The first 5 tracks of Yes are simply vintage Pet Shop Boys at their best, and quite possibly the best grouping of Pet Shop Boys tracks since 1993s Very. Yes is Overindulgent, sugary sweet, Eurodisco meets Synth-Pop that completely forgoes any and all trappings of a modern electronic scene.  Be it openly, or in secret if you’re a fan of The Pet Shop Boys it’d be next to impossible not to enjoy tracks like “Love Etc.”, “All Over the World” or “Did You See Me Coming”.

Things do however get a little hairy towards the middle, where The Pet Shop Boys flair for the sentimental and theatrical goes way overboard before stumbling somewhat back to form on “Pandemonium” & “The Way It Used To Be”. Color me impressed, I honestly didn’t think The Pet Shop Boys had just this much still left in the tank.

What’s This Garbage?

I imagine my girl Valissa Yoe had this amazing childhood that was like living on the set of Pee Wee’s Playhouse or The Muppets where Kermit the Frog woke her every morning with a song and rainbows peeked in from the window to watch. So who could blame her for not wanting to leave that fun colored freak show of a world behind? She likes to throw parties and gatherings pretty often, and often with a theme where you are encouraged to dress the part.  This week was Garbage Pail Kids night!  V’s dad even was a part of creating some of the original GPK’s!  I’m glad wacky runs in the family, cuz it makes my Wednesdays more fun.

gpk6

So we dressed like this…

gpk3

And we ate garbage like this.

gpk9

Intensive Carrie!

gpk5

Eating out of a garbage can never tasted so sweet!

gpk10

My Lil’ Weez (as I call her, not sure if she even likes that ). Lil’ Weez sticking to her guns as Mad Marietta and Rob was king of the night cuz it was his dirty 30!!

gpk4

Raw like sushi, but made of sugar that will rot yur teeth.

gpk12

Polly Pukes-a-lot (and looking hot)

gpk11

And if you were too cool for school and didn’t dress like a GPK fool then you got the garbage bag round yo neck to catch your GPK fantasy drool.

gpk7

Sylvia Snot? Ill Syl? I just so happen to keep slime around my place. You never know when you might need it. In fact i just re-upped with a new case coming in the mail for my own more private parties where you DON’T dress up. TMI?

This movie informs my person. It’s my family’s Catcher in the Rye: we buy copies whenever we see them. How is it that I had never seen this version of the poster before? Am I alone? A poseur among Real Fans?
