I <3 My Mom

After living in Scarborough (this is like the Brooklyn of Toronto) for the greater part of my childhood, my family picked up and moved to a more suburban part of the city. They figured that row-houses identical in shape, size and look concentrated in a 100 hectare radius was far more conducive to a ‘proper’ upbringing than the ethno-diverse ‘Borough. It was like any suburb in any part of North America: white, middle-class, working folks that had a penchant for Toyota Camry’s, organized children sports and mowing the fucking lawn.

Ironically, the suburb I grew up in, was flanked by neighboring Ajax (home of shitty pop-punk Sum 41 and the largest concentration of white-trash imaginable) and Scarborough’s most eastern and arguably most shitty community Malvern (over 1/3 of Toronto’s gun-related homicides find a home in Malvern).

In highschool I naturally gravitated towards hanging with the kids from Malvern. Because of my Asian/Caribbean heritage, I felt really comfortable fitting in because well, Malvern was predominantly Asian and Caribbean. But they were poor-ass Asians and Caribbeans and for the most part, were up to no good. I was always getting into trouble during these wigger days and I was always cognizant what kind of bullshit I was doing. But the one thing that prevented me from going over the deep end was a strict-as-hell mom that wouldn’t hesitate to beat the shit out of me if I stepped out of line.

With mother’s day approaching, this clip here is a homage to all the strict moms out there that hold shit down.

PS: to the kid of this clip. Don’t worry, everything will be all right.
