Review: Harlem Shakes – Technicolor Health

Harlem Shakes - Technicolor Health (2009) [Gigantic] // Grade: D

I’m sure you’ve all had that person in your social circle who basically was into whatever those around them were into as a means of having something in common. They were usually nice guys who just seemed to have zero zeal in crafting any interest, opinions or identities of their own. But when those social circles drifted apart and those people are usually left on their own to craft a set of tastes and interests. Luckily though it seems that in their 20s they all manage to find one another, form their own group of friends, settle in the same neighborhoods, read the same blogs, crack the same jokes and like the same shows. The Harlem Shakes are the sort of band made just for those people when left to their own devices to find new and “interesting” music. A pleasant, quirky, 3rd generation take on MGMT minus any of the bark or bite. Technicolor Health is the sort of album that if you didn’t know any better you’d think we’re interesting and creative. But you do know better! You can spot someone playing it safe by pulling in elements from countless other successful bands until they’ve created their own bastard flavor of vanilla. You’d just forget this album ever existed.

But perhaps you still have one of those friends in your life? If so then be a good friend and give them a copy of Technicolor Health, I’m certain they’ll appreciate it.
