Do They Still Call it Getting Up?

neckface

Sorry in advance for the bombardment of Tokyo-related stuff. Going there is—by far—the most interesting thing that’s happened to me in a long while, so you’ll forgive me if my next few posts are excessive in their memoirs-of-a-geisha-ness.

That said. I had the distinct pleasure of doing some awesome graffiti sighting while there. I’m very curious if any of you—loyal readers—are familiar with the artists/art below. That way I can stop calling them Neck Face (duh), Two Face, and Lady Face. It’s pretty self-explanatory, really.

The Neck Face (located in Shibuya), I’m told, is very ancient and famous. I know that he’s the crown jewel of that wall and everything, but the blood-style of Nokie is a bit more disturbing than I’d usually admit. It looks like, well, blood. Stylish blood.

TWO FACE

I’m using this name for him because, well, most of his stuff has two faces. I could be wrong in lumping the cloudier visages with these others…similar but then again sort of different. If I didn’t know better (I do) I’d say that this worked a very distinct Barry flavor. Most impressive about this stuff is that it’s all over. Sightings in Shinjuku, Harajuku, Shibuya, and all the way out in Ginza.

LADY FACE (OMG EDIT!! Lady Face is RONE from Down Under. Thanks to Ade on the Bloglin Email Hotline for the tip!!)

I REALLY like this stuff. I would buy a print of these without batting an eyelash. Or without sounding more gay than I just did. Sort of a Patrick Nagel-but-not thing going on. Sightings in Shibuya and Harajuku.

Neckface is from SF. he has done a lot of clothing and shoe collabs, suprised you never heard of him. and that can’t be very old, maybe a few years at the most I would guess.

Heads up Hateball (via the Bloglin email line)

Lady Face stencils are by a Melbourne artist called Rone.

    Thanks for the info Ade!

RONE is all over Melboourne (Melburn), with different variations of the lady paste up. They kind of have an 80s nail salon look don’t you think? Do you know those stickers?

    I’m obsessed with them.

  6. SJ Says:

Oh shit. Neckface! I have a neckface tee at home purchased in SF

    Yea dope

Is that 2nd to last Rone pic, the model Shalom Harlow?

Actually looking again it kinda looks a lil like Amber Valetta!

@Mars: I’m back in the saddle. Sick as a dog, but back in it. Thanks for missing me!

@Crook/Chonkey: Yes, I was indeed being sarcastic. As I am wont to…be. Neck Face is all over the place and then all over the place again, but I was given this wall as a landmark by several folks, so it is more or less legendary. A few years, too, in graffiti terms is pretty long…especially in Tokyo where there is a very light touch in general when it comes to pieces of this size in this public an area (about 3 blocks from Shibuya Crossing…if it was a banner ad, it’d be on the google homepage).

@Ade: Totally awesome. JUST the kind of info I was fishing for. Much much appreciated.

@SJ: And yeah, definitely got that nail salon look a la Nagel. I actually feel like it’s Patrick Nagel meets Bladerunner, but you be the judge. Woot!!

Is there a way you could post a higher res version of that Neckface joint? Just want to see the SECT between the last two…I didn’t know that he writes that and if so, then I wonder if those are his here in Toronto..

    Nice pics..

  10. Hateball Says:

@Plan B: just about the highest res you could ever wish for at the Flickr set linked at the bottom of the post. Find the photo you want and check out ‘All Sizes’. Thanks for liking the pics!
