Review: Deerhunter – Rainwater Cassette Exchange EP
Deerhunter - Rainwater Cassette Exchange EP (2009) [Kranky/4AD] // Grade: B
I’m starting to think if you up a stethoscope to one Bradford Cox’s turds you’d find a small heart beating a sweet little ditty. Seriously though In the past 2 years DeerHunter’s musical output has been something to behold! I’m starting to get the feeling that a spell of diarrhea from this band may in fact make for a half way decent album! There is no shortage of great songs or innovative ideas coming from them, and coming in such a short period of time… albums, solo projects, blog only downloads and now this short little EP of 5 of their more pop oriented compositions. These dudes just dropped the most marvelous of double albums barley 6 months ago so you know these tracks had to have just been sitting around somewhere and in all likelihood released to satisfy whatever contact obligation they have to Kranky before they bolt for 4AD greener pastures (I’m just speculating here by the way). They’re throwaways, frivolous tracks that probably didn’t fit on last year’s Weird Era Cont., and yet they’re still way to good to be considered simply throwaway songs! As I’ve said, Deerhunter must not only write and record good songs, but live, shit, breathe and vomit them out as well. That’s the only explanation I’ve got.
