Review: Lil’ Wayne – No Ceilings

Lil Wayne - No Ceilings (2009) [Cash Money] // Grade: B+
Dude goes in:
“I’m all over this Ice Cream beat like sprinkles.”
“I’m on some shit that aint come out the ass yet”.
“Still spitting fire you n****s wood to me.”
No Weezer. Lil Wayne is definitely making some people eat their words with this one. He’s off that rock mess—which as an artist he’s free to do, but I’m not into it—and back on the classique. He’s given it away for free, cause he does it so easy. He lets you know pretty explicitly too. This is on some Dedication2, Drought3 shit. Just dope raps. Only difference is No Ceilings is decidedly shorter. There are some guest appearances, but none really compare, and no Drake. Yeah, all alone on that king shit.

Are those really the lines from the mixtape that stood out to you?
I found most of the rap to be pretty generic Wezzy goobledygook.

Those were a few that stood out, not that those were my faves, but those were the ones I was able to recall from memory while writing this brief review. There’s lots on there though. LOL @ Weezy gobbledygook though.
Drew, the link is still live. Click on the left where it says download file.

I concede his punchlines are occasionally on point, but I just can’t believe how much he has regressed as an emcee. I think comparing this to Dedication 2 and Drought 3 is misleading, simply because those each showcased something fresh about his evolving persona, whereas this is the same Weezy we have seen mucking up tracks for the past two years plus.

Yeah, but it can’t all always be about progression. I think there’s a lot to be said for someone that can come as hard as Weezy has for the past couple of years, and still maintain that same intensity. He hasn’t slid back at all. Sometimes you just gotta let a dude frolic in his hardbody.

Well, Zachg, I guess we will have to agree to disagree. I’m not expecting Leonard Cohen, by any means, but while you say he hasn’t fell back at all, I commented on his regression.
“Got money out the ass. No homo but I’m rich” vs. “I’m on that shit that ain’t come out the ass yet.”
You be the judge of the pauseworthy lines, but I take Weezy circa ’05 100 times over.
