Fucked Up Fucked Me Up

The Brooklyn Masonic Temple is this giant stone fortress with huge ceilings and banners all over the place. If bands you like end up playing there don’t pass up the opportunity to go there. It’s big and old and awesome. Videot and I headed there to see Fucked Up and Titus Andronicus.

The instant we showed up all was full of love. We ran into the VIce Records dude, Chris, who’s a rad guy. We ran into Bob who books a lot of the decent punk, hardcore and metal shows around Brooklyn and he gave me a drink ticket. Then we ran into the Mishka crew. Pictured above are the Videot, Bundles, Dondell, Razmeo and Hat Guy.

We also ran into Viking Thrust from Livefastdie, Liquor Store and the Indian Casino & Jail Hippies Family Band. He just was involved in some book about heavy metal that he wants me to write about. Not a chance, Viking. There is nothing less paradoxical than a BOOK about heavy metal. I am proud of being stupid.

Damion Abraham from Fucked Up came over, looking like a walking ad for Mishka and handed us a passel of wristbands that granted us the power to enter the secret basement stronghold and drink the bands’ booze and eat their hummus at our leisure while they were performing.

Here’s Andrew W.K. with Pete Feigenbaum from Titus Andronicus and Dinowalrus. You know that when I did that Creepy Touch episode with him he didn’t tell anybody? His own bandmates didn’t know it was out there. I think he was embarrassed to get interviewed by Captain Walrus. Andrew was there to play piano for Fucked Up. What a cool guy.

Here’s Andrew with two of the Girls at Dawn. Their stuff is poppy and echoey. If you want to hear some music that sounds like the ghosts of bitchmas past then give this a chance. I didn’t know they were playing this show when I showed up. I pretty much stayed in the basement eating and talking until Fucked Up started.

Andrew W.K. put on his Andrew W.K. costume in the corner and lurched over the jukebox in readiness.

Pete looks across the table and surveys the destruction.

I met this girl at a friend’s 18th birthday. I know I am old because I am a lech now, a drooling mess.

Fucked Up got going and it was magical. They performed their album, the Chemistry of Common Life in it’s entirety. The energy was amazing, the band was strong as always. The sound was good and it was all taking place in this giant theater.

I was liking how these photos were coming out.

Also the Vivian Girls were there to do back up vocals. That’s cool.

After they finished performing the album they sang the most unifying rock song there is, Louie Louie, and everybody danced around like idiots.

And then Damion walked amongst the flock, shaking hands and hugging the still energized crowd. Here he is getting gay with local hardcorer, Jesse Gasface.
Here’s Fucked Up performing the final song of the set, Chemistry of Common Life. It’s intense as hell. So many stage dives, beautiful colors and alcohol spraying through the air. Such a good song.
This bloggin’ ends with a one question interview I did with Andrew W.K. I hope you love it.

I’ve seen Neurosis/Mastodon and Repulsion/Pig Destroyer/Brutal Truth there, and the venue is dynamite. It’s get ridiculously hot, but if you go to a hardcore/metal show and don’t expect dudesmell, you’re an idiot.
I really wish I was back in Brooklyn to have seen this show, it looked like a blast.
