Sporting Observations: Violence & Pain

Tyrone Prothro

Inspired by Jonathan Toews getting decimated by Willie Mitchell a couple weeks back, fellow Bloglin contributor Cheneyip had an idea for Sporting Observations content: namely, carnage. Hits, injuries, brawls, melees, combos, blood, finishing moves. Stuff like the pictures of Alabama wideout Tyrone Prothro, above and below.

I thought it was an excellent idea, so this will be Volume 1. As an initial foray into sporting violence and pain, I submit the following for your consideration, in no particular order:

1. Brian Campbell umbergers R.J. Umberger. (Yeah, a homer choice, but an indisputable classic. Jeanneret call here.)

2. University of New Mexico soccer player Elizabeth Lambert attacks BYU. The ponytail takedown is brutal.

3. Finally, an exhibition match between Mexico and Uruguay’s basketball teams gets ugly. I like how JV this is – lookit the flyin chairs!

PS: The pictures of Prothro up top are real. I thought they were photoshopped until I saw the reverse angle. He never played again and walks with a limp, but now he’s getting into coaching. Catch him on Twitter.

awesome. that campbell hit is my favorite. that willie mitchell one was pretty nasty too. or there’s a pre-season one of sloppy seconds phaneuf laying out okposo.

i tried to find footage of moises alou (pee pee hands) when he was younger. i think he slid into second or something and his foot was hanging all crooked similar to dude above. not AS bad but still grossed me out.

and did anything happen to that girl soccer player?
do they not have enforcers? 4th liners? georges laraque types to regulate on someone like her??

@cinematic —> Thanks for the heads up about Moises. I’m gonna find that shot and I’ll post it up when I do.

As for the soccer player, Elizabeth Lambert has been suspended by UNM, even after she issued a statement of apology the day after the game:

Lots of media coverage of her:

Moises’ epic appendage failure still makes me queasy. Haven’t found a video clip online, but I don’t need one. The memory remains. Actually, I hope the copies have all been tossed in a pile for Moises to pee on.
Close second to my man Clint Malarchuck, the Sabres goalie who took a skate to the throat and spilled a liter of blood on the ice. Apparently fans were fainting and teammates were puking. Yeah, so you’ve seen it a million times. Have another look!

  6. Caps Says:

Yeah, Mr. H, Malarchuk’s is the ne plus ultra of sports injuries – well, second only to Ray Chapman, the Cleveland Indians shortstop who died after being hit by a pitch at the Polo Grounds in 1920.

As a Buffalo native and lifelong Sabres fan, Malarchuk was a legend of my youth. My Death Adders FHL team is named the Fightin’ Malarchuks in his honor.

I didn’t see the Marlarchuk cut live, but I did watch the FLA-BUF game last year (two years ago now?) when Richard Zednik got his throat slashed by Olli Jokinen’s skate. That was scary as fuck – I nearly puked myself. I was white as a sheet and shaky as a motherfucker, sitting in my living room, just waiting for word from Rick Jeanneret about what had happened. Thank god he was ok.

Elizabeth Lambert is the Chris Simon of college soccer. Jesus she’s chippy. I don’t know whether to be be appalled or turned on.

  8. Ledbetter Says:

I don’t think that Lambert got so much as a yellow card for all of that. The ponytail takedown was pretty impressive in it’s speed and effectiveness. For more graphic injuries, YouTube search “Cisse”, “Larsson” or “Eduardo” + “leg break”….warning: these are all INTENSE!
