Go Solstice?
Pardon the random rant but this commercial caught me off guard late last night. The Gap’s new Holiday 09 commercial campaign features the chorus of “Go Christmas, Go Hanukkah, Go Kwanza, Go Solstice!” Go Solstice?
Is The Gap being super P.C. or has Wicca finally broken through to major holiday status? Did I miss a few heated courtroom battles about religious equality and Wiccan rights or is The Gap just that forward thinking in expanding their market? I really hope this eventually paves the way for a Michael Gondry directed Gap commercial featuring Pan the Goat-God in cashmere and boyfriend jeans.
Either way, here’s to a Pagan Holiday season!

Would any self respecting Wiccan actually even shop at the Gap? Seems a little outside of their “average as humanly possible” demographic.

Wiccans like jeans, hoodies and sweaters too! you don’t have to be all about Earth mother flowing gowns and power crystals.

I’d be interested in learning the other options that were thrown around the writing room before they settled on Solstice. Did Harvest have a shot? Oh, and that jingle makes me want to kill myself.

I live in Salem, a major Wiccan hub, and the only sure-fire way to spot one is their walking stick. They all have fucking walking sticks. Or should I call them “staffs?”

What’s with the popularity of “Hoser Chic” this year?! Seriously this looks like a nightmare involving Bob and Doug and hipsters.

Sadly, this is what they are teaching in our schools. The Gap commercial is just piggy-backing off what is happening in schools across America. My daughter learned in Kindergarten about all the different religions…and even a Hindu mom came in one day and taught that her people believe in a ten-headed king/god. I was horrified!
Personally, I think Christians should re-evaluate “separation for church and state” . And push to take religion out of the schools. No more fighting for “school prayer” either. Religion should be taught at home or a religious gathering. The study of religion should be restricted to high school, when kids can think abstractly and their own faiths are pretty much grounded.
So if I were to take a stand, I would eliminate all this non-sense about “celebrating all the faiths/religions” and make it a private (protected) institution limited to the family and religious communities – and keep it out of our public schools and government. And tell businesess, like the Gap, to back off too. They are making a mockery people’s personal faiths.
