The Brand New Worst Thing Ever

romhouben

My real life fear of being framed for murder and being locked up in general population has just been usurped by the tragic story of Rom Houben. In 1983 he was paralyzed in a car accident and declared to be in a vegatative coma state by physicians…however he’s been in a completely conscious “locked in” state for 23 years and unable to communicate with anyone — not even able to bat an eyelash. As science advanced, Dr. Steven Laureys, head the Coma Science Group and Department of Neurology at Liege University Hospital was able to detect Houben’s consciousness. Through a miraculous 3 year regimen of therapy, Mr. Houben, is now able to communicate via a touch screen computer.

Here are Houben’s words to describe his struggle:

All that time I just literally dreamed of a better life. Frustration is too small a word to describe what I felt.

I’m horrified, touched and grateful all at once by this story.

If you follow my posts, it’s clear that I’m receptive toward conspiracy theory and alternative media, but Randi’s assertion isn’t jiving with me in this case.
