Bloglin Weekly Round-Up!

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Sale-Fan2-350

Yo! Hope ya’ll had a great Thanksgiving! In case you were too busy rewatching the Carter documentary or stuck in a turkey-induced haze, here’s a look back at the week in Bloglin. I watched it, and think it’s a fascinating look at an artist and his relationship with drugs. I really like the part when he gets a crack tattooed on his forehead and he dances around saying, “I’m Frankenstein!” Heh.

• Black Friday has come and gone! A big thanks to all the Мишка fans and savvy shoppers alike who came out to 350 Broadway at the crack of dawn to scoop up items from the new Holiday line – which is available now in the online shop!!! If you haven’t already, check out the Holiday ’09 Lookbook featuring some wonderfully atmospheric photography by Marley Kate.

Skateboard Jay of South Florida proudly joined the Мишка Tattoo Club with a fresh “Engineered to Destroy” piece. Fuck and Yes.

• In the news: Poor bastard Rom Houben was thought to be in a coma for 23 years. Turns out he was only paralyzed and completely conscious the whole. The fuck? – Syndicated radio host Alex Jones drops some inconvenient truths about climate and tyranny and yadda yadda yadda. – Cornholio still needs TP for his bunghole.

• Blame the Vidiot for the new Kill With Video: Old Dogz (F*ck You Like an Animal Megamixxx)!!!

• If you don’t check out the Back to the Future mod, Darth Vader is going to come down from the planet Vulcan and melt your brain.

• The Sludge/Stoner/Doom debates continue with Choice Is Yours Vol. 54: Crack the Skye vs. Blue.

• Wondering how you can win one of the 40 Мишка x Brütal Legend Tees Kotaku is giving away? Just click here for the info and be prepared to prove your metal!!!

• Top ranking reviews of the week: Sleeping and Hiding from Tor Lundvall, For the Sake of No One from Revelation, and Transition from Ryan Leslie.

Store Spotting: The Return of Gazin!

Nick Gazin 350

During the wild shopping Black Friday weekend sale here at 350 Broadway our good buddy, and artist extraordinaire Nick Gazin, stopped by the store chat it up for a bit. Nick being the proud artist and salesman that he is tried to make sure that the t-shirt that he designed for the Holiday collection Sweet Sweet Simon did well by inviting some our customers to purchase it.

Gazin T-Shirt 350

But as awesome as the t-shirt is it didn’t sway these particular customs and after let’s say too much persistence the customers got a little fed up with Nick’s antics.

N Gazin3 350

….then shortly after proceeded to beat him senseless with hangers. It sucks that Nick had to learn it the hard way. But we here at the Мишка store know that Rule #2 is. Мишка customers are nuttin’ to Fuck wit!

Review: Tor Lundvall – Sleeping and Hiding

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Tor Lundvall - Sleeping and Hiding

Tor LundvallSleeping and Hiding (2009) [Dais] // Grade: A

I’ve written and deleted the phrase “Tor Lundvall paints music” no fewer than 15 times in the past 5 minutes. It’s stupid. It’s writerly. But listen to Sleeping and Hiding: it’s also effing true. Everything about this album is as textural and rich as thick paint on canvas; not watercolors but oils, not translucent pastels but midnight blacks. It’s a thing with Lundvall, this sort of nuanced layering; his dark, ghostly compositions have made him one of the most consistently interesting ambient producers of the past decade (and honestly, one of the most underrated).

Originally intended to be the third in a series of albums that started with 2004′s Last Light and 2006′s Empty City, and released now on very limited edition, hand-numbered vinyl, Sleeping and Hiding is classic Tundvall: both haunted and ethereal, an album that only gets darker as it moves forward. Opener “City Rain” is the lightest of the bunch, packed with sweet, sweeping atmosphere and Tundvall’s buttery violin strain of a voice (think Thom Yorke meets Erlend Oye). But then we get into “Spring Song” — an ominous thump that feels less like spring than some totally non-aggressive interlude outtake from The Fragile — and the ghostly throb of “Dark Roads.” Then the ominous whistles and steady sub bass of “Bird Girl.” And by then, the album is so immersed in pitch-black night, it’s difficult to remember that it started on a vaguely lighthearted note.

Which isn’t to say it’s not pretty — Lundvall is nothing if not a gorgeous composer. Or that it’s even all that inaccessible. Though he’s always been mired in the heaviest ambiance, Lundvall does, at heart, seem to love the sense and structure of a decent pop song. He just also happens to love stripping it of everything but its most basic elements and enveloping it in a warm, dark cave of barely there sounds. Or, you know, painterly. Like I said.
