America Is F*cked… (Graphically at least)
The following is a short b-reel clip from an upcoming documentary about Aaron Draplin. Aaron is pretty passionate dude when it comes to graphic design. The clip conveys his expletive filled story about going to pick up a vintage hotel sign he bought off of eBay and then his disgust in seeing what they were replacing it with and how much they were charged for it.
I really share Aaron’s sentiments as slowly but surely Graphic design is turning more and more into a trade profession and becomes less and less about the artistry. Teaching seems to focus more on how to use the programs rather than how to design, conceptualize and look at design as it’s own distinct artistic medium.

Isn’t this trailer a year old? When’s the film coming out?

I share his same sentimentality to a great degree. I don’t see any graphics for companies(mainstream of course) these days that are “classic”. Even vacuum cleaner logos. My mom has an old Hoover from the 50′s or 60′s and the company logo is so solid and cool, I guess the vacuum is hella solid too, it weighs like 40 pounds none of that plastic shit.

I may be biased, but I can’t help but feel this was more of a rant masked as a “trailer”. Prolly’s right, this has been out forever. http://makergo.com/shutup/?p=350

meh, old ugly replaced by new ugly. (plenty of people back in the day thought of that old sign’s style as tacky rather than ‘classic’…maybe someday we’ll all be nostalgic for garbage like the new sign)

Yeah, in 20 years we’ll be popping nostalgic boners over everything was covered in gradients and tacky drop shadows. But I do agree to an extent… kids learn a slew of programs but don’t learn fundamentals of composition or color theory. The eye has to come first.

Does this qualfy as a “Prolly’d” post since the trailer is a year old? When’s the qualifying time line?
