Under The Influence: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Recap

heman1

We were in LA last week for the Agenda Show and some other business and were lucky to check out the opening at Gallery1988 of Under the Influence: He-Man and The Masters of the Universe Art Tribute Show.

The opening was packed with a line down the block. Understandably, since the gallery was packed with over 100 artists reinterpreting the 80s toy and cartoon property of He-Man. There was also this massive Castle Greyskull installation that opened in the middle of the wall and extended throughout the entire gallery. Pretty fucking sick!

One of my favorite pieces, as well as the reason we were able to get into the show, was a print by Мишка contributor Jon Vermileya.

John had texted me earlier to get a photo of his print “Prince Adam Falls Prey To Super Skeletor In The Halloween Forest.” When we arrived to the gallery and saw the HUGE line, I decided to use Jon’s name to get in. At first I was going to say I was Jon Vermileya, but then I thought that might get me into an uncomfortable situation. So I told the door girl we were friend’s with Jon, and he sent us from NYC to take a photo of his print. It eventually worked and they let us in.

Another one of favorite pieces was by Skinner. It was called “”He Who Walks The Path Of Titans, Knows Not What Faith Will Bring”

Also on display was a cabinet filled of the Masters of the Universe Classics by Mattel. I am not really a fan of these new scuplts AT ALL, but they did make a new Scareglow figure which is kinda cool. I dunno, I just cant really stand when companies put out classics or retros and take too much time with the sculpts. Its like cmon, keep it simple!

You can check out some great photos of all the art over on the Gallery1988 Blog as well as some more photos from the opening on the Мишка flickr.

The show is on display at Gallery1988 through January 29th, so if you are in LA you should def check it out!

Why are you hatin’ on the MOTU classics? They took the beefy sculpts of yester-year, added some modern articulation, threw in classic accessories and better paint applications. I just received my King Randor figure in the mail last month and he’s awesome, he’s like a ‘roided up version of the Burger King!
