Wait…Bush? Is STP really considered as C list as Bush around here?

  2. My Pal the Crook Says:

Yes they are. This is Choice Is Your: Poseur Alterna/Grunge Edition.

Don’t get me wrong, I was seduced by the allure of STP at age 12-13. However by the time Bush came around I was too old and jaded to fall for their charms. But I can go back and listen to and really enjoy both nowadays as just reminders of being a teenager. The hate is gone nowadays.

  3. Mike Jones Says:

@Cornbluth… maybe to some people they are, but to assume EVERYONE at Mishka thinks of STP in that light is far from the truth.

Mike, why do you consider STP to be “poseur”?

Core is the easy choice here, but I don’t think that’s a fair assessment of Stone Temple Pilots.

  4. Sealed In Skin Says:

I still can’t stand Bush, they were like the segue for shitty bands like lit and nickleback IMHO. STP hands down!

  5. Toilet Cobra Says:

I can’t believe that the guy who posted this was insulting my ability to discuss music intelligently. These bands were both forgotten for a reason. They are the Sega CD and Virtual Boy of popular music.

  6. My Pal the Crook Says:

I call STP “Poseur Grunge” because that’s a fitting word. They weren’t some band toiling in obscurity and shitty labels for years that suddenly caught a big break with Core. They were a band that caught wind of a hot sound that was in it’s early stages and knew with their talent and connections they could emulate it to great success.

I still think they made an unbelievably enjoyable album, if not one of the best commercial rock albums of the 90s, but it was a very calculated effort on their part. You can hear them pulling from Alice in Chains, to Pearl Jam without shame and they do a really great job at it.

  7. Prolly Says:

    Core!

  8. My Pal the Crook Says:

Really Nick? I’d even stand to bet you’ve never even listened to either of these albums all the way through, you just recognize the band names and whatever stupid associations your brain is forming around them.

  9. chris Says:

stp is def a lot more legit than bush. A LOT. this is not even a question

  10. chris Says:

though i dunno. everything zen does kind of riff hard.

  11. Cyriaque Says:

Core. I frankly preferred “Sixteen Store” in its day but listening to it now conjures up too many crappy memories from the Bruegel-esque horror show that was 6th grade.

  12. Mike Jones Says:

As someone who kept up with STP until their fourth album, while I agree that the timing of their debut was strictly aimed for success, I’d have to argue that the band’s shift towards a more psychedelic guitar based sound set them apart from their contemporaries in the alt/grunge scene. I’m not saying they were breaking new grounds, but they deserve more artistic merit than “poseur grunge.” The DeLeo brothers truly stand out to me as one of the best rhythm & lead sections from any 90s rock band. That’s totally a matter of personal opinion though.

  13. Toilet Cobra Says:

Do I have to listen to every CD by every band I don’t like before I get to say I didn’t like them without you rolling your eyes? Have you listened to all of your least favorite albums a few times over?

I used to own the Bush CD because my therapist gave it to me. I listened to it twice and I remember people making fun of it for being bland back then. I only remember the STP songs that were on the radio and MTV but never heard anyone say anything good or bad about them. Nowadays people don’t talk about either of these bands except in reference to Gavin whatshisface being Gwen Stefani’s husband.

I have an idea for a bloglin article. Let’s each make each other a playlist of the worst music we can think of and then the other has to listen to it all the way through. And it can’t just be the same Sublime song over and over.

  14. Cornbluth Says:

I have the feeling Crook is going to get this week what he wanted from last weeks CIY.

  15. Luker Says:

    STP!!!

  16. Kingsnake Says:

never heard either so it’s a draw

  17. Mike Jones Says:

I like Sublime. 40oz to Freedom & Robbin’ the Hood are two of my favorite albums.

Nick… does baby need his bottle?

  18. Toilet Cobra Says:

“Yeah Nick, grow up annd listen to Sublime!”

  19. Taylor Says:

    CORE! Not even close.

  20. painiac Says:

Both these bands blow. Not only that, they paved the way for bands like Creed and Nickelback.

I have the same problem with bands like these that I do with Bad Religion. Not only do I not like your music, but you are single handedly responsible for the existence of Green Day.

  21. Mike Jones Says:

@Painiac: Come back in a few years after you finish college and have a better grasp of contemporary music history.

  22. My Pal the Crook Says:

I agree you can’t hate a band for other bands that came after them. They’re not responsible for that… if that was the case then the Beatles obviously suck for all the crap in modern music that they obviously spawned.

  23. My Pal the Crook Says:

Hey Nick what’s the name of that one band that you really like? You know the one that sounds just like the Ramones.

  24. Toilet Cobra Says:

    CROOK:
Is that supposed to be sarcastic? I don’t know any one man bands that sound like the Ramones. Blank Dogs?

  25. Toilet Cobra Says:

I misread that. I like four bands that sound exactly like the Ramones. The Queers, the Mean Jeans, Nobunny and the Ramones.

How many times a day do you act like a dick to your friends because you don’t think they are dumber than you when it comes to discussing music?

  26. Mike Jones Says:

    Crooked Boners.

  27. My Pal the Crook Says:

Mike Jones, Brian and I argue and disagree about music all the time and unless we’re all sitting here secretly with hurt feelings no one has ever made the other feel like a dick because we disagree. It’s just you Nick.

  28. Toilet Cobra Says:

Talking in an office and talking on a public website are different. Other people can read this forever. And your musical arguments are mostly about my personality flaws and personal failings more than about any one problem.

We’re going to take this farther though because this is much more interesting than Mishka’s music journalism. We’re actually getting to truths about people here, which is real and engaging instead of trivial and boring.

Let’s open the gates and really talk.

  29. painiac Says:

@Crook and Mike Jones: I don’t dislike the bands because of the bands they spawned. I don’t like them anyway, it’s just another nail in the coffin.

And Crook, was this what you wanted from last week’s Possessed Vs. Death?

  30. The Vidiot Says:

This is like Rancid VS. The Transplants from where I’m sitting.

  31. q_belmont Says:

‘Ding Ding’ Mishka Bloggers, round one, FIGHT!

    core

  32. blink blink Says:

    Core

  33. big baby campbell Says:

Yo I was young when Bush came out so I initially loved that shit. They were also called Bush X in Canada for the first album at least due to legal issues. I thought having the X was cooler.

Even back then though I thought that Bush and company were a major drop off compared to the Smashing Pumpkins. Bush helped me see that mainstream alterna could suck balls.

  34. Trevor Says:

    sixteen stone. hands down!

  35. chenyip Says:

Yo. Only white people like STP and Bush. Ya’ll are white.

  36. Ben Says:

Cobra and Crook should each put 50 albums they love or hate into 2 hats from which Choice is Yours will now be pulled.

  37. My Pal the Crook Says:

So you want a bunch of Choice is Yours featuring only Ramones, Souljah Boy, ICP, Death in June & the Nuggets comps?

  38. Danny Boy Says:

STP but only for a couple singles. All in all they both suck dick. Cobra and Crook ya’ll need to hug it out

  39. The Vidiot Says:

I think Ben is on to something. Let’s see a Crook VS. Cobra series of Choice Is Yours. Crook picks one, Cobra picks one and the Bloglin goblins get to decide which is superior. Everyone takes it personally and entertainment ensues.

  40. Toilet Cobra Says:

Yeah, I’m calling you out. We do Choice is Yours: They’re Can Only Be One. Me versus you. We each have pick an album. Whoever wins gets to saw off the loser’s head.

I only have five songs on my computer and they are by Souljah Boy, the Ramones, Death in June, ICP and some random song off a Nuggets comp.

  41. My Pal the Crook Says:

Nick what are you not understanding? I’m not interested in debating or even knowing your opinion.

  42. Ben Says:

Well okay, maybe not EVERY CIY, but at least a few of them here and there. You can’t deny the ensuing threads would be hilarious.

  43. big baby campbell Says:

I want to see more confrontation up in this bitch.

    GO VS SERIES!
