Caprica Re-Up: Rebirth

caprica-rebirth

It’s time for BSG fans to get in touch with their feminine side. After waiting nine months for a new episode of Caprica, I’d say I’m satisfied. It’s essentially a drama with a mechanical girl at its core. We trade in our spaceships and guns for fedoras and unstable marriages. But there’s something hypnotic about it. Could be that at the center of this operatic story is a young girl trapped inside a massive mechanical body. We sympathize with her, but we still don’t know what her and Ben were planning to do with virtual Zoe. With the real Zoe gone, is Zoe 2.0 going to go along with their plan or say fuck it to monotheistic terrorism all together? Also, I found how they shifted from shots of Zoe to her hulking frame was effective.

Even though it’s the well-established BSG universe, they still had a lot of world building to do, and I’d say mission accomplished. We got a better feel for the characters and Caprica itself. We visited the streets of Little Tauron, a commons area during the memorial, and even the Pyramid stadium for a Caprica Buccaneers game (the CGI crowd looked terrible). I never liked the infusion of a professional sport into BSG – it’s really pointless – but getting to hear a bit of the Caprica national anthem was cool.

So far, Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz) is the most interesting character to me. He seems to be completely over the fact that his daughter is dead and her consciousness is inside this huge robot. Seriously, did he forget Zoe is in there? He’s more concerned with being able to duplicate this robot. He’s also obviously lying to Joseph Adama about Tamara being “erased.” Government contracts aside, Daniel’s on his own shit with these robots and I’m stoked for the Stoltz to see it through.

It’s cool to see little Willy Adama interact with Joseph, who was frequently mentioned on BSG. Willy’s just a kid with a lot of grief and no outlet. As the series progresses it’ll be interesting to watch the rift between father and son grow wider. For now he’s latched onto Uncle Sam, who I totally forgot was gay and married. A Tauron immigrant gay mob enforcer showing Willy how to get away with smashing store windows? Awesome.
