Digging For Fire Vol. 67: Air Miami – Me. Me. Me.

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Ok so this really isn’t much of an obscurity, but it is  a great album that’s been unjustly unappreciated and overlooked… much like the man behind the band, Mark Robinson. Hopefully that names rings a bell but I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t. Before forming Air Miami, Robinson was one of the founding members and the driving force behind Unrest, the most overlooked (unless you’re from D.C. I suppose), yet one of the greatest 80s-90s indie bands. Robinson also founded and ran of one of my favorite record labels from my youth, Teen Beat.

Upon the break-up of Unrest, Robinson and Bridget Cross went on to form Air Miami and picked up right where Unrest’s final album, Perfect Teeth left off. Me. Me. Me. was Air Miami’s lone album and is filled with more of the delicate and catchy indie-pop that Unrest made their hallmark in the later portion of their career. Truthfully I’ve always likened Me. Me. Me. to be the true final Unrest album, even if it is without founding member and drummer, Phil Krauth.

I’m not sure what it is about Unrest that has never catapulted them to the sort of revered status other 80s and 90s indie rock bands have achieved. Perhaps it was all of those years spent being much harsher and experimental that have kept droves of people from discovering their later work…but you’ll be hard pressed to find a band that crafted indie pop as touching and haunting as Unrest and Air Miami did in the early to mid-90s. I’m surprised with the whole revival of Shoegaze and Dream-Pop, Unrest and/or Air Miami haven’t gotten some sort of deluxe reissue treatment yet. So take this chance now to get acquainted with the charms of Mark Robinson and Bridget Cross, here’s hoping it won’t be your last taste.

Air Miami – Me. Me. Me.

From Paris With Love: G.I. Joe Meets Training Day

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Given just how many of the Bloglin’s writing staff fell head-over-heels for Taken, I was surprised no one ventured out to see From Paris With Love on its opening weekend. Perhaps it’s that impulse you get to simply stay away upon seeing Travolta with top billing in a film… But I felt Pierre Moral’s second feature film for the American market deserved a chance, regardless of the cast, and so a few weeks after its release, I just had to know if he could deliver once again.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays James Reece, a diplomatic aide stationed in France, who is slowly trying to work his way into becoming a special operative. Reece receives mysterious phone calls with menial espionage assignments that, while essential, mostly keep him out of harm’s way. But one night, that all changes… Reece is asked to head into action and pick up another operative who is being held in customs, and assist him on his assignment that night. Think of it as a test, you do good and you’re in the “club”, he’s told. That other operative is, of course, John Travolta, as the bald-headed Charlie Wax.

What ensues is your classic action movie odd couple dynamic that you’ve seen a million times before. Travolta is the wild one and Meyers is the guy with the stick up his ass. Like chocolate paired with peanut-butter, they just work together. Meyers follows, err, assists Travolta as he wreaks havoc through the streets, back alleys, and coke dens of Paris, slaughtering one group of baddies after another until he gets to the top of the food chain. Each leg of their assignment is just as much about testing Meyer’s fortitude as an operative as it is about stopping a heinous plot from befalling Americans at home and abroad. It’s kind of like Training Day, except morality doesn’t really come into the picture here. Travolta’s character is like a more believably-scripted G.I. Joe hero than anyone depicted in that movie, and the action sequences here are infintley more enjoyable and plentiful.

Moral follows much of the same formula as in Taken, which made both movies so mesmerizing. Long intense stretches of action and mayhem, followed by 10 or so minutes of “plot”. Hell, he even goes back to the well for  a few of the same tricks that made you go “Oh shit!!” while watching Taken. But it really doesn’t matter if it’s been done before, because not only can Moral make the old fresh again, it just simply works for making an action movie exciting and enjoyable from start to finish. And while From Paris with Love may not be as good of a movie as Taken, it’s just as entertaining. And that’s what I’m really looking for out of an action movie… 90 minutes free from boredom, and From Paris with Love delivers!

Those who stayed away from From Paris With Love because of Travolta, fear not… he’s appropriately hammy in this role. I’m under the firm belief that much like Nicolas Cage, when in the hands of a good director, the stars can align and transform his acting inadequacies into strengths. Just think of Face-Off (truly a clash of the titans!) and you’ll know what I mean. Moral gets just enough schmaltz out of Travolta to lend the action sequences a perfect shade of over-the-top comic book believability that most actual comic book movies fail on delivering. Plus, as cheesy as it was, I gotta give him props for using the opportunity of having Travolta in Paris to play homage to Pulp Fiction.

Pierre Moral knows action, and is simply the best action director since John Woo. In all his movies, he manages to transform Paris from the city of love into the scariest city in the world. If you were a fan of Taken, go see this, you’ll be thoroughly entertained…I guarantee that. Now we just have to wait and see what Moral does with Dune, which I’m infinitely more excited for now than ever.

You Should be Listening to… Wetdog

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

l_9be0f9fc9756d52dee1e454e66f96f57

The other night I was listening to Wetdog‘s latest LP “Frauhaus!” (which came out hipster hit machine Captured Tracks last year) and was thinking about just how much I liked it and how much it reminded me of something that should have come out on Kill Rock Stars circa 1993. I wasn’t the only one either I broke out my Ouija board and got in touch with my old friend Kurt Cobain who said that Wetdog is his favorite new band…pretty damn impressive if you ask me!

These London ladies play a killer mix of everything from post-punk to Twee. There’s a lot of Raincoats, Delta 5, Liliput/Kleenex to even Huggy Bear and Bratmobile going on here. It’s like I said earlier…you could take this album and pretty convincingly slip it into the 1990s Kill Rock Stars (or even K Records) catalog as either a new release or an archival reissue from the 80s and I doubt anyone would even bat an eye. But now that I think of it, Captured tracks is really reviving the feel of 90s KRS in the here and now so this is hardly surprising. But now I digress, so why don’t you just check out this lil vid above for their song “Lower Leg”.

The ladies just DJed at Topshop in London as part of their Fashion Week celebration and were the subject of a recent Nylon Band Crush which has I’m sure gone a long way in winning them the love of stylish lads worldwide. The ladies are currently gearing up to jump on a plane and make the trip over to the new world to play 4 shows during this year’s SXSW festival. The band also made some time on their schedule stateside to play a show or two in NY.  There’s currently a TBA for March 28 and a show booked at Glasslands for April 2nd. See you there!

FREAKY-STYLEE

Welcome back to another installment of Freaky Stylee where we choose the best fit of the week and award that person a $75 credit for our online store and of course bragging rights! If you think your fit is great, then don’t ruin it with a crappy photo! Great fits, deserve great pictures. Contestants can enter multiple times to Freaky Stylee, even past winners. So submit those images of yourself rocking Мишка as part of their outfit and who knows? You may win! Guys and gals are all welcome to enter. Check after the break for complete rules on entering into next week’s Freaky Stylee! Good luck and now on to the fits…

—–

This week we’ve got another great juxtaposition of good style and good photography, which in case you haven’t been following Freaky Stylee for the past few weeks is almost always a TKO when it comes to winning.  I’m dubbing this  The “Rhymes With Nifty” Screenwrite because Liam is studying screenwriting and uses a word that “Rhymes With Nifty” over and over again in his answers like it was going out of style…who knows, maybe it is? Or maybe it was just the answer for 23 down?

Name? Liam Dempsey
Age? 20
Location? New York, NY

What do you do? I’m studying screenwriting at NYU. But I also spend a lot of time wondering why I don’t jusy drop out and DJ instead.

Describe your style? The Thrifty Spike Jonze. I like skinny ties and hitting up the Salvation Army on 4th Ave for good finds. But you can’t skimp on kicks…they’re like hubcaps. You see a nice ride with crappy wheels, it just ruins the whole picture.  But if you’ve got a shitty ride, throw some new wheels on it. It’ll probably look ridiculous but at least you’re owning it. Ill kicks are essential.

What are you wearing? Мишка Keep Watch Satin New Era with the mouth on it! Thrifty pea coat, thrifty button up (H&M maybe?). I think I’ve got purple Lakais on also, but ya can’t see em. And the Times crossword in my hand.

What are you currently listening to? Madvillain. Bassnectar. Joy Orbison, Rusko and other such wobbly beats.

Looking out over the river is always conducive to some meaningful thinking… I wonder though if Liam is thinking about how to resolve a 3rd act or dropping out of school in that picture? If you want my 2¢ (and you’re going to get them regardless cause it’s my blog), don’t drop out of school to DJ. You can DJ and go to school, it ain’t that complicated to figure out how to do both. I know going to NYU poses the challenge of having the whole city distract you from your studies, but if you can figure out how to juggle both you’ll be all the better for it in the future. Oh and congrats on winning!

Full rules and information on how you can enter next week’s Freaky Stylee after the break.

You may need to install a Veoh player plugin into your browser to view this and other Veoh videos!

P.S. I think the poor tracking and audio syncing of this rip somehow just add to the viewing experience of Akira. It makes me feel like I’m 12 again and I just got some 4th generation dubbed copy from a friend of a friend.

Violent Caveman Frankenruge Version by Nag Nag Nag!

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Hopefully you all remember when we released the Nag Nag Nag Violent Caveman (Мишка Varient), and were lucky enough to get your hands on one! Well we’re back at it again, but this Violent Caveman is based on the Barom-1 Villain Frankenruge.

The header was a collaboration between myself, Lamour Supreme, and Nag Nag Nag! The NNN came up with the concept, I did the sketch and Lamour did the inking and coloring. I really think the header card came out awesome!

Click the image to enlarge it.

Unfortunately this is a Japan only release with only 10 of these being produced. So the odds of you adding this to your collection are kinda slim to none. Sorry!
