Choice Is Yours Vol. 64: Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! vs. Entertainment!

Devo – Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! (1978)
Vs.

Gang of Four – Entertainment! (1979)
The Game is simple… if only one could exist which would it be? What’s more important… personal relevance, cultural significance, or simply being the better album all other things aside? Choice is yours…

As much as I love “Entertainment” I’m gonna have to go with Devo! here. Because if “Entertainment” had never existed then we wouldn’t have had to go through that God-Awful post-punk ‘revival’ that happened in the mid-00s….”now everyone play the hell out of your hi-hat”……”that’s right Franz Ferdinand, you’re culturally relevant”……hehehe.
Both great albums though.

I can’t even argue here I love Gang of Four and if this was up against another album would defend its greatness but everything about DEVO is amazing i saw them in Central Park with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs around the time Fever To Tell came out and til this day it is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

So I’m the only one who can’t sit through an entire Devo album without needing to break something?

Devo are my favorites.

Gang of Four now, but this may change.

i thought this was hard… but listening to them again i’m definitely going with devo.
also, it seems stacked against devo! i figured freedom of choice would be the contender against entertainment, since those two are the albums with “the hits.” modern lovers might have made more of a match against are we not men.

DEVO.

i agree with Crook. Devo kindve makes me feel like im going fucking nuts. Gang of Four

I’m frankly shocked this many people are going with Devo. I was anticipating an even split… But Devo have also been touring more than Gang of Four of late and I’m sure really endearing themselves to people with their live shows. On a side note: Gang of Four in their 40s or 50s (however old they are these days) were still one of the best live acts I’ve ever seen.
Nothing against Devo, I do like them quite a bit and deeply appreciate every single thing they’ve done for music but like I said I’d be hard pressed if i could make myself sit through an entire album willingly. It just pogos around and tries to be too quirky over the course of an LP for me to stand. I think Devo work much better as singles than they do in album form.

I’ll agree that Gang of Four kick it live like they have no right to. Seen them twice of late and loved every second of it.

You are all fucking pussies.

As culturally relative Devo was, I’m going to have to go with Gang Of Four. I have to admit that Devo had more impact on my youth but this is about NOW. I have Gang Of Four on the ipod on heavy rotation and no Devo.

Gang of Four are the poor man’s Mekons.
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:39 am
Man I came down to your store yesterday to talk some shit haha. Hate to stay with the majority but Devo massacres Gang of Four. I really tried to like Gang of Four as well.
Devo are fucking punx.

Devo, no brainer. This is a solid classic from one of the best bands around. And I’m not just sayin’ that ’cause I worked with ‘em back in the early 90′s on a video game. I’d also recommend “Hardcore”

Gang of Four. Damaged Goods is maybe the best post-punk song ever.
