The Game is simple… if only one could exist which would it be?  What’s more important… personal relevance, cultural significance, or simply being the better album all other things aside? Choice is yours…

o man…. Blonde on Blonde is one of the best records I have ever heard but I’am going to have to go with the VU on this as inspirational as Dylan was/(is) think about how many bands would either not exist or be very different if it wasn’t for the Velvet Underground and Nico.

  2. Oh Mars Says:

I’m not really into Dylan, but I’ll take Blonde over & Nico ONLY because Nico’s voice drives me fucking crazy. In a bad way.

  3. DJ Dookie Fist! Says:

Oppositely, my father could only listen to his Blonde on Blonde tape in the car when he was alone because Dylan’s voice irritated the rest of our family so much and we’d constantly do mean impressions of it. (“OOOOOHHHH MAAMA CAN THIS REEEEALLY BE THE EEEEEND…”) But then I grew up and my musical taste expanded beyond the Monkees and Debbie Gibson. So I think I’ll have to vote for Dylan here, in honor of my Dad. U were right, pa

  4. My Pal the Crook Says:

I LOVE Nico’s voice. I actually love every aspect of Nico’s sad existance on earth but I digress. Nico is what made the first album so transfixing and otherworldly. No one to this day has ever had a voice so compelling yet totally dissassocated and devoid of any emotion.

  5. Cornbluth Says:

    VU&N.

Dylan is the superior artist, but that VU record is one of the greatest ever recorded.

  6. 420 Says:

Velvet Underground were a huge inspiration and NICO’s voice rules. Dont get me wrong both choices are essentials, but if I have to pick it’s VU.

  7. GlamNation Says:

VU for sure. Nico’s voice is incredible! It’s one of the most eeriest and beautiful voices in the history of music. Every aspect of this VU album was perfectly executed.
I don’t love Dylan, but I do respect his impact on music. The one album that I do like more than Blonde on Blonde is Highway 61 Revisited.

  8. ANTONIOSF Says:

    Velvet Underground for sure

  9. chenyip Says:

This is way too tough to answer. These are one of the few CIY where you just have to pass. Both are way too influential in the shaping of music that it’s IMPOSSIBLE to unanimously choose one over the other.

  10. Dr. Dinosaur Says:

Normally I would say Velvet Underground but I, like Mars, HATE Nico. So yeah…

    Blonde on Blonde.

If you had picked any other VU though, shit would have been different.

  11. Rapist Wit Says:

Bob Dylan wins, the best Velvet record is Loaded.

  12. Nick Says:

    Fuck nico

  13. My Pal the Crook Says:

I agree that VU’s best record is Loaded, but VU & Nico is still better than Blonde on Blonde.

  14. SHRIMP SAUCE Says:

This is to Easy :: The Velvet Underground

  15. pooks Says:

What is with all the Nico hate?

I will never understand a number of revered singer songwriters (Dylan, Cohen, etc., same old bulsshit over and over), so any VU wins over any Dylan ANY day of the week for me.

  16. GlamNation Says:

    ^^ COSIGN!

  17. Toilet Cobra Says:

    Both these records suck dick.

  18. My Pal the Crook Says:

Neither are as good as Liquor Store right Nick? I mean duh, how could they be!?!

  19. big baby campbell Says:

    this battle is for real…

Gonna have to think about this.

  20. Mishka Bloglin » Blog Archive » Come to Midnite Till Death This Friday! Or Don’t, See If I Care Says:

[...] up is Liquor Store. These guys also go pretty nuts and are way better than either the Velvet Underground and Bob Dylan. The band ranges from having five to eight guitarists and it is intense. Like the other bands they [...]

  21. from the northwest Says:

i like the velvets, especially the debut and loaded, but blonde on blonde, highway 61, and bringing it all back home are all pretty untouchable. why such a hard decision!?
