The Subculture of Japanese Kaiju
Our pal Ricky “Velocitron” Wilson just did a cool interview for a Japanese online magazine by the name of Metropolis. It’s a good read for anyone interested in Kaiju.
I like how they referred to Kaiju as a “subculture within a subculture” and later went to compare the runs of Kaiju to “low-run punk and hardcore records.” For everyone that knows, well… you know why that has significance.
I also found it pretty funny that the article barely mentions Kaiju anywhere in it. They instead focus mostly on “designer vinyl.” I think that’s a good reason why Kaiju will never get as big as urban vinyl has. I think Kaiju and the fervor it creates just goes over most people’s heads. It will always have a place though in the toy collecting scene and continue to fuel its own underground movement, regardless of the trends.

Kaiju are for hipster toy collectors who are still pissed that their mummy wouldn’t let them play with their little sisters’ Barbies.
