Chew Lips - Unicorn (2010) [Family] // Grade: C+

If you are a fan of all things Electro Pop you will probably find that this album hits all of your sweet spots, however if the words Electro or Synth Pop make you cringe or you’re looking for anything just outside the standard fare, then avoid this at all costs. And while, I’m a pretty big Electro Pop fan Unicorn is solid debut full length it falls just a little bit short of what I expect from the genre.

Lead singer Tigs voice is on point and full of emotion, the music produced by band mates Will Sanders and James Watkins which range from 8- bit to piano ballad are catchy and danceable without being overbearing, but for those who heard early single “Salt Air” and had high expectation, will be dissapointed that many of Unicorn’s other tracks aren’t instantly as captivating.

As the album plays on it tends to drag a bit and lose momentum since each song the same formula in it’s construction. Thankfully though Chewed Lips has enough chops to every so often make you go “wow”, I wonder if the band was really ready for a full-length? maybe a few more killer singles to hone their chops? It’ll be interesting to hear future releases from Chew Lips and see if they can evolve as a band and truly earn the hype that made them one of London’s most buzzed about bands.
