Review: These Are Powers – Candyman EP

Candyman

These Are Powers - Candyman EP (2010) [RVNG] // Grade: A

These Are Powers’ discography is comprised of ultra noisy experimental music that defies easy comparison and often times for me is most easily described as loud and fucking awesome. On their latest release the band has crafted three dance floor ready tracks that are less free form thank their previous work while still holding onto the sound and energy that has made These Are Powers the band that we’ve come to know and love.

Title track “Candyman” sounds like it could be a Brittany Spears single were she was locked in a room with a few tabs of acid, a sampler and a tape recorder.  Track two  “Gutterspaces” has  more hip hop influence that wouldn’t sound out of place backing M.I.A. . “World Class Peoples” the last original track on the album offers up a minimal synth hooks with bleeps and bloops over a repetitive drum loop while Anna Barie’s bellows out her signature vocal style. The last two tracks on this 5 song EP are remixes, one courtesy of Teen Girl Fantasy who takes “Candyman” and re-works into a Hipsterafied dancefloor anthem for A Night At The Roxbury.  The final remix on this EP is the wobble worthy Dubstep tinged “World Class Peoples” done by Cosmetics.

I must admit that when I first saw the cover art I was freaked out a bit. I’ve since grown fond of it as a reminder to never hit up the Good Humor truck should I be on Hallucinogens. The band also has a video for “Candyman” which may have caused me to go diabetic just by watching it. Go see for yourself!
