SXSW Countdown to Ov Curse Part 1: Light Asylum, //TENSE// & Blessure Grave

With just a little less the two weeks before Мишка and Chronic Youth cast the dark shadow that is Ov Curse over this year’s SXSW I will be counting down the days and giving you some background on the bands and DJs that are without a doubt making this one of the best shows going down during the festival.

Brooklyn’s Light Asylum is the duo Shannon Funchess and Bruno Coviello who go by the monikers of Light Asylum and Brother Bruno. The pair have been receiving attention in the blogosphere for their dark dance offerings that have gained the love of mysterious art school kids and beat starved party goers alike.

Channeling the likes of Depeche Mode and Echo and the Bunnymen, Light Asylum have created a collection of songs whose appeal reach well beyond the confines of the post-punk and electro realms.

If I didn’t know any better I would think that the music of  H Town’s //TENSE// was actually an old Ministry album that I had missed ravaging from an old girlfriend’s CD collection…and that is precisely the point. //TENSE// was created to revive the sound and spirit of early industrial acts like those released in the early days of Wax Trax!

Originally a one man band, //TENSE// has now expanded to a three piece group whose vision has gained momentum lately in the world. //TENSE// promise to be one of Ov Curses most engaging live performances and is prepared to forcefully take over record collections come 2010.

What more can we say about Sand Diego’s Blessure Grave? Chances are if you are even the most casual of Bloglin readers you know that we to put it simply, fucking love this band. Blessure Grave is on the forefront of the battle to win back Goth from the mass of mallrats who have managed to ruin it for the rest of us. The band has been churning out impressive releases at lightning speed all leading up to the release of their debut full length Judged by 12, Carried by 6 on Release the Bats.

Blessure Grave takes cues from 80s goth and punk and turns into so much more then just mere Unknown Pleasure revivalism. Reyna Kay and T. Grave form the core of Blessure Grave and have slowly recruited a full band around them to bring their dark goodness to the stage. Every year there are a handful of bands that become SXSW breakouts and I think there is a pretty good chance Blessure Grave is going to be one of them.
