Standard Deviance: I Went to Some Art Fairs, I Listened to Some Rap Music, But I’m Still White-Skinned & Poor
Where to start? Why to care? Our homies over at Creative Control put this video up a couple weeks ago. I’ve been listening to the song on repeat for hours at a time. The video is cool, basically what has come to be expected with the proliferation of HD. Straightforward, no high concepts, just dude rapping. It’s interesting to see how HD’s ability to captivate us with stunning resolution lets us stop fussing with the theatrics. One of the trends in both media, and technology seems to be the apotheosis of the quotidian–I’m into that. Fader had mentioned that Big K.R.I.T. is looming in the shadow of TI. This is the first Big K.R.I.T. song that I’ve heard, but I find him much more compelling than TIP #NoShade.
I’ve also been listening to the new Laws mixtape 4:57 (download here). Being that Laws is a fellow Floridian I was very excited when I found out about him. He had another mixtape over the Summer–or maybe in the Fall–titled Your Future Favorite Rapper. I’ve been keeping up with him and I’m eager to see where he’ll go. He started out, like a lot of the other Florida dudes that I know, battling. To me, that says a lot about a rapper’s potential, and it’s dude’s potential that I’m most excited for. There are definitely some bangers on both of these records, and I’m diggin where dude is going, but you can tell that he has tons of skill that he’s still holding back. I think we’ll see some good stuff from him this year.
I went to Fader’s Yelawolf show on Monday. I’ve been keeping up with this dude since early in the Fall. He’s definitely been making moves, and coming up. He put out a mixtape with @DJBurnOne (same dude that did Pill’s 4180) a few months ago. I’m not gonna lie, at first I was bummed on dude’s mixtape. I felt like it was lacking in content, but after a few listens I definitely began to feel differently. This guy is serious with the craft. He’s cold lampin on the kind of cadences that most emcees wish for. There is a great deal of finesse, and understated effort to what he does. And, that finesse really came through at the show on Monday. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was hoping that his live performance would reflect the studio recordings. It did, the guy did not miss a beat, and the delivery was top notch. I could definitely become a fan of this dude if he continues in the same fashion.
I went to Pulse, Scope, and Independent last week. If you’re not familiar those are three of the bigger art fairs that happen in New York along with the Armory fair. I have this very tumultuous relationship with art. I love it when it’s good, but it disgusts me when it’s not good. Unfortunately for me art is rarely good, I’m probably compelled by 15% of the stuff that I see, and that’s a rather generous estimate. But, between Pulse, Scope, and Independent I was able to catch a few things that excited me. I took poor notes, but here is my list of stuff worth re-visiting after the fair:
• Evol at Wild Gallery
• Tadashi Moriyama at Bonelli Arte
• Daniel Glaser at Magdalena Kunz
• Ivab Puig at Kunsthaus Santa Fe
• Al Fosik at David B. Smith Gallery
• Brian Nuda Rosch
• Gaain Gallery

i find this distasteful it doesnt show any art work either if i saw this on the side of my building i would be pissed i would rather have something bright and colorful that makes me people come look at. — Some dude on Flickr talking about a Dickchicken stencil.
That’s funny cause I would much rather see some subversive shit than some bright colorful vapidity. Here’s an update from Richard Poultry himself. Whether you’re in New York, Los Angeles, or London dude’s in your hood:
