Reader Poll: First R-Rated Movie You Saw in Theaters

In yesterday’s Round-Up, I mentioned how the new Terminator Keep Watch fitted made me think of an old theory that Terminator 2 was the first R-rated movie for many people in their mid to late 20s. Let’s test that theory out! But not just for kids in that age range, let’s hear from everyone. What was the first R-rated movie you saw in theaters. Did you sneak in? Did your parents drop you off or go in with you?

Why should you answer? Because I’m single and reading Bloglin comments gives me something to do before bed besides watch videos. And because I’m actually interested in seeing if any movies pop up repeatedly.

Your theory holds some water as I am 27 and my first R movie @ the theatre was T2.

  2. corwag Says:

Yep, I’m 26 and it was infact T-2.

  3. Perez Says:

Mine was The Crow. I rocked that soundtrack for years and thought about how awesome it was of my mom to let me do that.

  4. MAC Says:

“Tales of the hood” was my first… I Almost shit my pants, and My parents actually took me lmao it had to be mid to late 90s and I had to be under 10yrs.

  5. @JoeKeez Says:

im 25 and im not for sure if it was T2 since i cant remember exactly what it was. it definetly is a HUGE possibility tho.

  6. Phill Says:

I don’t remember what my first rated R movie was, but I know it wasn’t T2. However, I have a similar theory that “Headhunter” by Front 242 was the first industrial song many people heard (at least people around 30 years old). I find this to be true quite often.

  7. eatyourchildren Says:

I’m 25 and it was T2 for me too. When I opened this post based just on the title and the T2 poster came up it was like you read my mind.

  8. Fulk Says:

    Wild Geese, Google it, awesome.

  9. r2d2 Says:

  12. Kev Buc Says:

I’m 24 and my first R rated flick was T2, but it was @ home with my father. I don’t recall the first one I saw in a theater was sadly…

  13. charlesassfuckyourdog Says:

23 and 7/8. first R in theaters was howard stern’s private parts when I was ten. I gave it two thumbs up because it had boobs and Stern Rules! Bababooey to y’all.

  14. Lamour Says:

American Werewolf In London. I was young because my mom was pissed because I convinced her it wasn’t that bad. hehe

  15. roger Says:

i am 27, my first was Beverly Hills Cop 2. dad was kinda awesome.

  16. Lelo Cool J Says:

I grew up in a shithole in the east of France and we had this theatre down the street, which was run by some filthy old scum who would only screen blockbusters, horror, sci-fi & porn (& horror porn, blockbuster porn). He would let anyone in, regardless of age restrictions. Still, he refused to let me in for Day Of The Dead because I was WAY too young (I was like 8 or 9 when it came out), so first R rated movie I saw was -oddly enough- Bloody Bird (aka Aquarius/Stagefright, directed by Michele Soavi) which I totally became obsessed with after seeing the trailer before Crocodile Dundee ! I was 11 or 12.

I think Predator was next. Or maybe Something Wild (I remember it being restricted over here but can’t remember if it was R or just PG13)

  17. Section09 Says:

CHILDS PLAY. Parents took me to watch it when I was 7. Fucked up my childhood for a couple years.

  18. Shark Says:

1991, Boys N The Hood. I was 11 ( but i had seen many and worse on tv, italy is way more liberal with censorship and ratings)

  19. Scott Says:

I’m 23 and it was Air Force One. Still an awesome movie

  20. Paul H Says:

My conservative mother somehow forgave the R rating if Harrison Ford was involved in the movie. I saw Patriot Games in ’92 at home when I was 10. She later let me rent Kentucky Fried Movie because she had absolutely no idea what it was about [sweet]. It wasn’t until ’97 at the ripe age of 15 that I was allowed to see Air Force One in the theater (I was denied Starship Troopers). This leads me to an entirely new theory: conservative baby-boomer women see Harry Ford as a sort of Christ figure.

  21. penski Says:

    Trainspotting, I think.

I’m English though – that was an 18 rating (strictly over 18s) and I sneaked in at the age of twelve.

Does an ‘R’ rating mean strictly-over-18 or is it a if-accompanied-by-an-adult thing?

  22. Vancouver Notic Says:

im 22 and my first rated R movie was Scary Movie when I was 11 in the summer of 2000.

Terminator 2 was the first movie I ever bought on VHS when I was FOUR!!! yes you heard me right, I got it when I was four.

At the store, my sister who is 2 years older than me, was allowed to get “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” on VHS, so I threw a fit until I was allowed to get a movie too, and I picked Terminator 2 based on the badass picture of Arnold on the box. My dad let me get it, cuz he’s an immigrant who didn’t know anything about movie ratings.

That moment was a defining point in my life. I can recite every single word from that movie, and it’s still my favorite movie ever. I still got the VHS (and original box)!!

Fuck…im gonna go watch it right now.

“dipshit? your calling moi…. a dipshit?”

    “she’s not my mother….todd!”

  23. Zach E Says:

Im 20 and my first R-rated movie had to be fucking CANDYMAN!!! I could not sleep and T2 does fucking rule maybe the best action flick of all time.

  24. Zach E Says:

Sorry misread the first one in theaters was 28 Days Later.

  25. jc Says:

my first two were The Amityville Horror & The Shining. my mom brought me to both. i was 8 & 9. i’ll never forget the shining on the big screen!

  26. //TENSE// Says:

Spent my summers in the Rio Grande Valley…so I started seeing R Rated movies early…my most vivid memory was watching ‘Predator 2′ and ‘Rocky V’ in the same day at the $1 Theatre….shit was so good! So, summer of 1990?

  27. shit la merde Says:

I saw Do The Right Thing at a theatre (1989) in Thunder Bay, Ontario (Canada). It blows me away that it even got screened there. I think I was around 16-17 so we jumped over from whatever was PG-13/AA. There was only about 15 people watching it so I remember waiting to get kicked out the whole time. I was so into Public Enemy I had to see that movie!

  28. rn Says:

it was a dark, rainy day in June 1981. my folks almost never took us to the movies so it was considered a privilege to go when you could. For some reason, my cool uncle was picking up my 2 older brothers (then 12 and 15) to see a movie. i was determined to tag along but they were equally determined to ditch me on this trip. My brothers told my mom Raiders of The Lost Ark is too scary, too long and i’d never make it through the movie… all of which was true. I could barely make it through General Zod and Non’s scenes in Superman (my birthday party in ’79). But in ’81, this youngster (8) wasn’t backing down from Raiders even tho he was reasoning with himself that he would likely end up bolting from the theater at some point. With palms sweating, we get to the Roslyn movie theater and they make me swear never to tell Mom what we’re about to see: STRIPES (R for sexuality/nudity, language and some drug use.)

    memorable quotes:
“Well, my name’s Dewey Oxburger. My friends call me Ox. I dont know if you’ve noticed, but I got a slight weight problem.”

  30. Toshiba Guts Says:

  31. rich Says:

I’m 25 and the first R-rated movie I saw was T2. There’s some pretty interesting movies in here.

  32. Sealed In Skin Says:

I’m 28 and my first R-rated movie in the theater was Aliens. Shit gave me nightmares for years. My first Industrial song was Nitzer Ebb’s Join in the Chant.

  33. Daniel Says:

It was Vacation with chevy chase. i was like 6 and my parents friends son had to earmuff every time they cussed. He let me see the tits though. Still funny as shit.

  34. BUCK Says:

“LOST BOYS” Was the first R rated movie i saw in theater.

  35. dedleg Says:

I’m 25, and fuck me, but I honestly can’t remember the first R rated movie I saw in theaters. Which means it must have sucked. I do recall the first R rated movie I ever saw at home though, which was Leprechaun, and mostly I just remember being surprised at how stupid it was and couldn’t believe that was all I was missing.

  36. oprah spinfrey Says:

my first was “universal solider” & i was in 7th grade. it was playing at this mom & pop movie house outside the mall. all the kids would go there, cause they always had some pimply face teens working the box office & they didnt give a fuck.

after that, we would always go see movies there. candyman, pet cematary 2, resevoir dogs, trespass, passanger 57, dr giggles, all those awesome movies of the early 90s.

  37. kid nickels Says:

I’m 27 and T2 was the first ‘R’ rated movie I ever watched. The only thing was that it happened at a sleepover and not in the theater.

  38. jebus-crisp Says:

Im 29 and the first rated R movie i remember seeing in theaters was Jacob’s Ladder and Flatliners when i was 10, They played as a double feature at some drive-in somewhere in orange county CA. i don’t remember much of Jacob’s ladder even though it is a great movie, but i cant forget how Flatliners made me feel that little kids kicking the shit out Kiefer Sutherland was awesome and scared the shit out of me.

But the first R Rated R movie i saw was Creepshow i was like 3 or 4 and my mom told me i would say ( I want my cake) all the time if you have seen the movie you will know what im talking about. I think Creepshow was one of the best horror movies of the 80′s, at least top 5.

  39. The Count Says:

I’ll be 27 in less than a week and T-2 was definitely the first R-Rated movie I saw and remembered.

However, Army of Darkness was the first R-Rated movie I saw in a theater.

  40. slo Says:

    25,i vouch for that!

  41. digitall teddybear Says:

While growing up in communist russia, it was hard to see american movies, we didn’t even know what R rating was, but the first movie with all the blood and gore scenes for me was Evil Dead, watched it on a russian VCR player together with dad. The funny shit is; like after watching it, we alway said, there is some strange shit going on in the us

  42. Terence Says:

I’m 24 and I’m pretty sure the first R rated movie I saw in the theater was the Blair Witch Project. I was on vacation in Seattle and I went to the movies with the kid neighbor of the people we were staying with. We got dropped off and bought tickets for The Sixth Sense then snuck into Blair Witch instead and I still sorta regret that decision to this day, especially considering that I had the ending to the Sixth Sense spoiled for me by my dipshit typing teacher a few weeks later.
