After a long time of talking shit, Das Racist are finally dropping their mixtape and it sounds more like an album. Perhaps a nationwide tour will come next? Jointly presented by ourselves and the band’s own label Greedhead Entertainment, Shut Up Dude is comprised of roughly half old joints and half new bangers with an overlapping Venn diagram center of weird shit. If that was not enough, famed street-cum-gallery artist Aakash Nihalani collaborated with Das Racist to create the mixtape artwork, which combines references to his trademark psycho-geometric style and his easy candid photography.
The mixtape presents a broad picture of what Das Racist has been up to this past year since their “Combination Pizza Hut & Taco Bell” became a brilliant and irritating internet meme.
Das Racist’s other songs are funny, too, but more complex. They also feature more actual rapping than “Taco Bell.” The group’s often hilarious, sometimes dark new mixtape, Shut Up, Dude, is a deeply self-conscious batch of word-association jumbles, references to other artists’ lyrics, and half-hearted hooks… Well-played, Das Racist.
