Store Spotting: Forty Cal Kelvin

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Over here at 350 Broadway we get a lot of regulars who tend to come from miles away to get their Мишка fix… but there are those who are lucky enough to live right down the block, like this snazzy young fellow. Forty, a South Williamsburg resident who happens to frequents the Мишка store on the regular.

Being a regular sometimes has it’s advantages. Whether it’s you getting the early news on new drops, events or sometimes it’s the store clerks being a little generous with the stickers and pins. But come in here as often as Forty does and well you may even get your own blog post on the Bloglin.

Now were not making any promises , but if you are as cool Forty is then you’re probably on your way to some perks.

Recap: Killing Spree Los Angeles… Goths vs. Douchebags!

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Killing Spree, LA ‘s monthly Minimal Synth/Cold Wave party that we sponsor went down on Friday March 12th at the Two Headed Horse.

The night kicked into full gear with a set from DJ Carlos Rossi who got the crowd dancing and ready to go… Carlos was later joined by DJ Black Rainbow for a tag team set that brought the darkness to a fever pitch with Goths, Death Rockers, Punx, Hipsters, Record Nerds and everyone in between to the floor.

Matt and Jorma from The Bronx/Mariachi El Bronx held down the fort on the patio where around the 3am mark…everything started to get real, real weird.

Shirts went flying…and soon fists as well… As the night was winding down, a real bad element showed up at the party, tensions built up and exploded into a brawl of epic proportions.  Goths and misfits vs. the Hollywood douche bags.  Punches were thrown, bottles were broken, hair was pulled, blood was spilled…we are not sure if everyone made it out alive…but one thing we are sure of…is that we can’t wait for the next one in April!!!

For a taste of the soundtrack for the evening, here are two accompanying mixtapes…

ICP Back on Tour? The Gathering 2010? Hatchet Happenings for that Ass!

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Tis’ I Kev Buc aka the most hated Bloglin associate and I’m back with some more news from the hatchetland. First off is another episode of Hatchet Happenings and HOLE-LEE-SHIT is this thing embarrassing. This is the second episode and it’s far worse the its predecessor. It’s full of bad acting, horrible dialog, and enough embarrassing rhetoric to make any juggalo want to not claim the title anymore. That’s saying a lot with the recent events and stereotypes surrounding the culture.

Anyway, this video is really long but i’ll clue you into the main highlight now… the ever popular GATHERING OF THE JUGGALOS dates, so start planning for that bad boy.

null

In other big news, guess who’s coming to your big town? Juggalin’ Juggalos! Yeap, the infamous clowns themselves the Insane Clown Posse are hitting the road AGAIN on the “Happy Daze Tour”. This time they are playing bigger venues to house some JCW wrestling pre-show madness followed by a slew of openers. Coolio, Kittie, Necro, and the Kottonmouth Kings are all opening up this tour.

I think that’s a horrible lineup personally and won’t be going, but hey different strokes for different folks! Well that’s about all the worth while Juggalo news this week so remember to fuck off, WOOP WOOP!

You Should be Listening to… Wizzard Sleeve

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Alabama isn’t necessarily known for it’s Punk, so I wouldn’t hold it against you if it was one of the last places on earth you would find a band like Wizzard Sleeve… But Mobile, Alabama is where these guys call home. The good ole boys play the sort of fuzzed out Lo-Fi punk that were it not for their myspace page and songs like ” Alabama’s Doomed” I’d have thought they were Brooklyn natives.  But once you take a good listen to the bands dark and grimy punk jams, their southern upbringing starts to make sense.

The bands debut album Make The World Go Away was released on last year on HoZac Records who seem to make it their business in bringing the world the best in Lo-Fi Garage and Punk. The album is 11 tracks of dark, murky psych-punk that you wont be able to stop listening to.

The band has a handful of shows coming up in California so if you are in-or-around LA, San Francisco or Sacramento go check out a show get sketchy and make a mess of yourself! Hopefully Wizzard Sleeve is planning another trip out east soon so I too can get a lil’ rowdy with them.

Review: Goldfrapp – Head First

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

GoldfrappHead First (2010) [Mute] // Grade: A

Goldfrapp have never been a predictable duo. Working in the electronic genre, Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory have churned out surprise after surprise across a decade long career. Their last album, 2008′s Seventh Tree veered far from both the electronic pop notes and success of 2005′s Supernature, favoring a folky, organic sound that was widely regarded as a misstep. It’s no surprise then that for their fifth album, Head First, Goldfrapp return to upbeat pop melodies, one-upping the success of acts like Ladyhawke and Little Boots with Moroder-homage compositions and Euro disco visions.

Head First is a seductive trip across 80s Euro disco, wind blowing in your hair as you watch the city disappear behind you. Alison’s whisper-soft melodies coo coyly into your ear on “Hunt”, beckoning you closer, then releasing you into Gregory’s crescendo of pulsing synths like an indecisive temptress. From the soft, sex-oozing rhythms of “Hunt”, “Head First” and “Dreaming”, Goldfrapp flit aloofly into blasts of rich, sunny melodies. The Van Halen “Jump” inspired lead single “Rocket” is a sure bet for dancefloor success, but it’s “I Wanna Life”, with it’s ambling vocals that give way to an ABBA-esque singalong chorus that speaks best to Goldfrapp’s pop prowess.

Alison’s barely there vocal influence can be heard in the likes of Sally Shapiro, The Glass and The Chromatics, and it was only a matter of time until Goldfrapp stepped forward with a Euro disco album of their own. Longtime silent influencers of electronic pop, Head First places Goldfrapp under bright lights, earning deserved credit sans scrutiny.

Lost Re-Up: Ab Aeterno

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

After last night’s episode ended, I went onto Facebook and Twitter and was kinda shocked to see how many people were expressing hysterical glee over this being the “best episode ever.” A lot was answered last night, including why Richard doesn’t age – which is like, the biggest mystery next to what the fuck the Island is. And Nestor Carbonell was incredible. He’s played such a reserved, gray Richard for so long that to see him be so convincingly broken and suicidal propelled his character to Locke-like levels. But, in my opinion, it took way too long for them to get the ball rolling. The moral dilemma over his sick wife, imprisonment, Black Rock, the storm…that all took about 40 minutes. 40 minutes. We already knew he came on the Black Rock. That whole dog-and-pony show could have been compressed into a much smaller amount of time.

And besides moving at a snail’s pace, the whole love-loss-redemption story has been done to death on Lost. It doesn’t do anything for me anymore – it actually bores me. They played variations of the Life and Death piece about a dozen times last night. I’ve been ride-or-die for season six thus far, so being underwhelmed over this one episode isn’t going to discourage me. Besides, as dull as Richard’ s backstory was, the Island mythology Biblical content was simply incredible.

I like it anytime the Devil or the concept of a devil is brought up in shows/film. He’s the greatest literary villain of all time – kiss the ring. Last night, MiB (the real MiB, not Locke) gives Richard the dagger and tells him to kill the Devil (Jacob) and not to let him speak. The same instructions he gave to Sayid. Jacob easily overcomes Richard’s attack and very bluntly tells him that he is not dead and this is not Hell… but the Island is a “cork.” It keeps the evil contained so it can’t spill out into the rest of the world. Jacob is the warden.

He’s a deity that believes in free-will and he’s trying to prove to MiB that man is not inherently evil. People are brought to the Island by Jacob to act out these morality plays, but everything they do is of their own volition. they can be influenced by the competing, silver-tongued deities, but their path is their own. This brings a lot of the show’s ideas about Fate into question – sorry, Locke. This could also mean that MiB was brought by Jacob to the Island or banished him there in some way.
