We are beyond ecstatic to announce that on Thursday April 15th, Мишка will presents a series of work from Mark Todd at our Brooklyn based 350 Broadway store and gallery. The show is a collection of work from the celebrated illustrator whose range has graced the likes of McSweeneys and The New York Times.
Mark Todd uses the visual tropes of comic art and inventive fantasy as the creative impetus for his work. His interest in the deconstruction of pop cultural icons such as X-Men, Iron Man and the Fantastic Four prove even more alluring when coupled with his post modern sensibility. The subjects almost become erased through a process of repetition, distortion and the use of mixed media materials including spray paint, cel-vinyl glossy varnishes and dusty stains. The pieces are rounded at the edges, appearing as prized objects or tablets encoded with some of civilization’s most iconic collective wisdom.
Mark Todd graduated with honors from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California in 1993. He then moved to New York City, working with clients such as MTV, Coca-Cola, Sony Music, The New Yorker and The MTA. In 2003, he moved back to southern California with his wife and fellow artist, Esther Pearl Watson and their daughter Lili. Recently, his work has broadened over the last several years to include gallery exhibitions, working with book publishers and teaching at Art Center College of Design while still creating for his high profile periodical and corporate clients.
For the show we got together with mark to produce two limited edition Mark Todd x Мишка tees. The first is Mark’s own trademark spin on comic cover re-interpretation applied to our classic Kaiju Invades graphic originally illustrated by Lamour Supreme.
For the second design we had Mark illustrate one of our favorite movie Sci-Fi/Horror baddies of all time…The Predator! Both shirts are printed in very low quantities and will be available in-store on the night of the opening.
The show will run from April 15th through May 13th with all of Mark’s work being available for purchase! We seriously cannot wait for this show to open. Mark has been one of our favorite artists for a long while now and we’re thrilled to be working with him and bringing this show to New York.
