You Should be Listening to… White Ring
NYC’s White Ring brings a dark and syrupy fog where haunting synths, creepy melodies waltz about with the sort of vocal and rhythmic manipulation more characteristic of a Dirty South club banger than your usual Electro jam . It’s that latter part that has drawn White Ring some comparisons to SALEM, that while warranted aren’t entirely accurate.
White Ring really are their own purple imp who is not afraid to move beyond getting Chopped and Screwed by dabbling in everything from Goth, Ambient and Electro in crafting songs that toe the line between catchy and experimental while taking you deep into a dark rabbit hole.
Take “Suffocation” for example. A song that makes full use of White Ring’s unique charm of mixing so many disparate influences into one cohesive and catchy song. “Suffocation” goes everywhere from the Post-Rock drone of Flying Saucer attack alongside the enthusiastic bop of Julie Ruin era Kathleen Hanna all over a Codeine coated beat.
Or how about “Roses” which erupts from the bowels of Hades with effortless transitions back and forth between a syrupy slink and old-school Trance. There’s a rich and bone chilling tapestry making up the back bone of every White Ring song that’s not only fun to listen to, but also really fun to dissect.
White Ring’s only official release thus far is a split 7-inch out with like minded oOoOO on Emotion Records. The single features the aforementioned “Roses” from White Ring and “Seaww” from oOoOO.
There are currently no upcoming shows listed on the band’s Myspace but I’m sure it wont be too long until they’re playing somewhere in the NYC area.
