M.I.A. Declares War on the Gingers
I’m not sure how heavy the rotation has been on M.I.A.’s newest video ‘Born Free’ but I just saw it for the first time yesterday and it’s worth the watch for conversation’s sake at the very least. It’s directed by Romain Gavras who is the same guy who made the most literal video interpretation of Justice’s ‘Stress‘ next to maybe, La Haine.
This video is steadily being flagged and removed all across the internet for its graphic content. M.I.A. is so punk. Am I the last person to see this?

Romain Gavras uses blunt symbolism to depict Tyranny, Oppression, Prejudice, Injustice, Anti-establishmentarianism, and World Crisis.

ya… you’re probably the last person to see it, but it needed to be posted on the bloglin sooner or later!
P.S. death to all gingers.

I’m just waiting to see what CopperCab has to say about all this, WAAAAAAAH THHHHHA FUUUUUUCK WAAAAAS THAAAA!

That video sucks. I mean honestly….”Get it?! Because they are GINGERS! OMG dont oppress people!” I’m willing to give Gavras a pass and blame it all on MIA. Oh and that song sucks too. Lets take ghostrider by suicide and just yell BORN FREE over it. Hot.

Dude this has been all over the internet a week ago. ANYTHING, ever involving M.I.A. has always been all over the internet a week ago. General rule of thumb.

I had a feeling something like this was going to happen.

I’ll be staying clear of pop music updates for now on.

If it makes you feel any better while I knew it was out a week ago but didn’t bother watching it until now. I’m shocked that no one has pointed out that Michael Q. “Raise My Roof” Schmidt is the naked fat dude having sex in the video. At least I’m 99% certain it’s him with his hair back in ponytail.

Boo Ya!!!! Scroll down to through the comments or command F Michael Q. Schmidt.
Even more hilarious is that he’s commenting on various blog posts about the video. <3 him!

Whoa! Crook with the dusty internet fingers. I was going to assume that there were a whole slew of Michael Q. Schmidt looking dudes throughout middle America but that’s pretty wild.

Now we’ve turned something Prolly’d into something new. Great job!

I prefer his alternative “No Stress” video

I can’t get into stuff like this. It lacks subtlety, and if you’re already aware of the fact that the world is militant, oppressive, capitalistic, and totally fucked this is just sand in the spiritual vaseline.
I don’t follow M.I.A. very closely, but this music and this video seem like giant strokes of frustration.

This video was released on Monday, and most people don’t understand the symbolism. Everyone mentions gingers, but I haven’t read anything about Landmines in Cambodia or Afghanistan.
April 29th, 2010 at 2:40 pm
No one is mentioning the symbolism because it’s ridiculously heavy handed and hardly the interesting part of this video. It’s the fact that M.I.A. chose redheads for it that is.
April 29th, 2010 at 3:01 pm
its ment to shock white people that have no connection to 3rd world sufferers. i saw this doc on the myanmar monk killings, and like five diff people i know didnt even know that shit happened. shock and awe at its finest. i just saw the video for the first time here, too. im a lazy pothead, fuck off!
April 29th, 2010 at 3:22 pm
This dude always delivers terrific videos. This rules. No one would be analyzing his failure to accurately propagate a message if the video wasn’t as amazing as it is. A+

I heard recently that a German Shepard breeder in the states had an order for 20,000 dogs for policing but had to refuse the order for moral reasons. Better run and hide gingers/everyone.
April 29th, 2010 at 5:40 pm
I don’t see why one would make a video trying to shock “white people”, when it seems like a fuckload of the world’s people north of the equator have no connection to any sort of suffering whatsoever. It would be more effective if someone could make a video that depicted “selfish” people instead of a race of any kind, you know… to drive a point home.
April 29th, 2010 at 5:41 pm
but i think the video does what it does well. for the record.
April 29th, 2010 at 5:58 pm
Complete and utter trash… both the song and the video.
It lacks any really meaning…it seems like she’s just trying to get the ‘shock’ value as opposed to making any real statement. In an art-less pop culture world full of music lacking any real substance I’m sure a lot of people will think this actually stands for something.
I did notice Michael Q Schmidt and it made me wanna raise my roof a little.
Also the no stress video is pretty fucking funny…I hadn’t seen it until now.

amongst all the overly lo-fi artsy videos i do like me some blatant violence. everyone stop pointing out obvious things, there’s nothing subtle about the video or the message. just enjoy it as a short movie which is definitely more interesting than many theater movies out now.
April 29th, 2010 at 9:30 pm
You clearly don’t watch enough movies.
April 29th, 2010 at 10:59 pm
anyone recognize that sample?
April 30th, 2010 at 12:07 am
interpretations vary depending on the viewer.

M.I.A. “Born Free” lyrics
You could try to find ways to be happier
You might end up somewhere in Ethiopia
You can think big with your idea
You ain’t never gonna find utopia
Take a bite out of life make it snappier, yeah
