Bootleg Sessions v4 Trailer

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

When Bootleg Sessions first started up about three years ago, there were maybe a dozen or so people in the US riding their fixed gears like BMXs and only two or three companies making components for those riders. Around that time, Мишка started to support this growing scene and ever since, we’ve been stoked to be a part of this growing sport. For the 4th (and sadly, final) Bootleg Sessions, Burd cast riders from all over the world to send in their submissions and man, there are some bangers in this DVD.

I can’t wait to see the complete project. You can pre-order a DVD right here!

Store Spotting: Crank That AC Up!

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Right after the release of  Keep Watch Vol. XVII, the man behind it, the one & well not only, AC Slater dropped by the 350 Broadway to get geared up for current UK/European tour. As you’re reading this, AC is across the Atlantic, fully raging and blast bass at every stop of his Take You Higher tour.

The Trouble and Bass alum even took a sec to floss his exclusive T&B gold charm. Everyone loves a little bling in their lives and I’m sure seeing this will have quite a few die hard T&B fans a little green with envy and scrambling to figure out how they can get one too! Sorry, crew only!

Digging For Fire Vol. 69: Long Hind Legs

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Upon returning home for the Summer after my Freshman year of College I remember getting into a pissing contest with an old high school friend of mine who went out west for school. It was a silly “Oh I bet you’ve never heard of this band” type of childish and pretentious taunting that was mostly in good fun as we caught each other up on a years worth of music that we’d each discovered since entering college.

One of the bands tossed my way was Long Hind Legs who I made a point of tracking down soon after because a) I really liked their name and b) she was wearing a homemade T-shirt for the band while we engaged in our game of “cooler than thou.”

This was also a period of my life where I was fanatically trying to discover as much 70s and 80s Post-Punk and New Romantic as my budget and resources could allow. Long Hind Legs perfectly played itself right into that… while rougher around the edges, their maudlin yet poppy tunes were the perfect throwback I was looking for.Plus it wasn’t ever just straight aping, Long Hind Legs kept a distinct “sound” of 90s era indie rock while engaging in their brand of revivalism. Listening back to their work now, along with obvious nods to Joy Division, Bowie/Eno and The Associates, I’m also hearing things like Guided by Voices (“Painfully Obvious” sounds like a lost Robert Pollard recording), Neutral Milk Hotel and even some Thom Yorke moments in some of their songs.

It wasn’t until the band’s final release, the oddly titled Feb. 4th-14th, 1998 EP, that I realized that Long Hind Legs was actually a side project of Vern Rumsey, the pummeling bassist of Post-Hardcore gods Unwound. Their first album credited all tracks to Wolfgang and Paul and it wasn’t until the follow-up EP that Rumsey’s name and image graced the liner notes and art. Rumsey was joined by friend and singer Greg Allen, who I still don’t really know too much if anything about. I actually never did much digging into the back story of the band at the time of release, I was content in merely just enjoying the album. But as a pretty huge Unwound fan, discovering that this obscure gem that I had been treating myself on for about a year was actually the brainchild of Rumsey just made it all the more sweeter.

Like other late 90′s Pacific north-west band, Satisfact, Long Hind Legs goth tinged post-punk revivalism was a bit ahead of it’s time and sadly I don’t think very many people (Unwound fans included) ever really discovered or got into the band while they were active. But some 13 years after the fact as we surf a new wave of grave, Long Hind Legs not only sound just as good, but are pretty fresh and relevant. If you’ve at all been into some of the newer Goth bands we’ve been pushing on You Should be Listening to…, Reviews and just general Bloglin posts I would really give both of these releases a listen. You’ll really, really enjoy them. Pinkie swear.

Rejoice! Party Down Season Two Has Begun!

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

After Eastbound and Down, Party Down is the funniest show on TV and the second season has just started. Last year I sung praises for the show and while I tend to use hyperboles like toilet paper, I still stand by my words. It’s on the Starz Channel, which I don’t think anyone actually has. But everyone has Netflix and thanks to their tight relationship with Starz, each episode is available on Watch Instantly after it airs. Seriously, don’t sleep on this show.

Guest stars in the season premiere included Danny Woodburn (Mickey from Seinfeld!) in a cameo as hilarious as it is breif, Michael Kostroff (Maurice Levy aka Barksdale’s lawyer from The Wire), and character actor Jimmi Simpson as goth-rocker Jackal Onassis.

If you need to catch up, the entirety of season 1 is still available on Netflix Watch Instantly. Now if you’ll excuse me, “I think there’s some drunk sluts over by the snack table…”

Serious Saturdays #38: Buraka Som Sistema…The Sound of Kuduro!

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

When i first started hearing about Buraka Som Sistema, my sophomoric mind kept running to 1993′s classic Mortal Kombat II character Baraka and his fatality. But this Lisbon based group hits way harder than any fatality, animality, brutality or babality (oops) put together! Comprised of two MC’s, Kalaf and Conductor, and two DJ/Producers, Riot and J-Wow, the group have spearheaded the current rise of tropical influenced dance music by infusing classic Kuduro beat with techno and rave elements.

In 2006, J- Wow and Kalaf started their own imprint called Enchufada to release their signature creations and waited for the rest of the world to catch-up. In 2008 when they released “The Sound of Kuduro” featuring M.I.A., DJ Znobia, Saborosa and Puto Prato, the world was finally ready and listening.

In 2008 they also released their pivotal Black Diamond album featuring the smash hit “Kalemba (Wegue Wegue)” featuring Pongolove, earning them the Best Portuguese Act at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards. “Kalemba” is still currently in heavy rotation and in two years has been full stamped a classic tropical track.

Many producers have since adopted this sound and have tried to make it their own by either adding more house/deep house harmonies, or going even more tropical sounding instruments. Unfortunately most completely miss the mark and sound that Buraka Som Sistema has not only spearheaded but keep a stranglehold over.

The group have been  spreading their Tropical gospel worldwide through their eclectic DJ sets and energetic live shows. During a recent trip to New York, they absolutely destroyed HARD NYC playing in support of Major Lazer and Boys Noize, leaving many a party goer unconscious.

The guys have just released an epic BB1 Essential Mix chock full of bouncy bangers that’s been on heavy rotation here for days… unfortunately it doesn’t including J-Wow’s ravey new release “Klang” but you can catch a lot of other Buraka tracks alongside Nightslugs, Enchufada and Sound Pellegrino releases.

Violent J Responds to the Hype Surrounding “Miracles”

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

I don’t know about you, but I’ve wondered how Violent J’s felt about all of the attention the recent ICP video for “Miracles” has been getting… from the endless photoshopping of video stills, last week’s SNL spoof to simply the “Fuckin’ Magnets” line. Shaggy? as J once tweeted… he don’t even go online, so I doubt he even has a clue. So fuck magnets and fuck the internet and however it works.

Yesterday J broke his silence on his thoughts on everything in an interview.

Yes, most of the miracles we mention can easily be explained away by science, that’s why we say the line “fuck scientists.” Their factual findings sometimes explain away the Earth’s cool mysteries. Part of me wishes they were lying. Part of me doesn’t want to know how they really make crop circles. My imagination wants to believe it’s aliens or somethin’. If people can’t relate to that, then that’s their loss. I mean, seriously, it must truly suck to have no imagination about these things. Us Juggalos have deep imaginations, and an awesome sense of humor.

As for the infamous line, “fuckin’ magnets… how do they work?” Magnets were like magic to me as a kid. You could move things across the table without actually touching them! I found that shit amazing and I still do. If you don’t like that, have a dick for dinner.

You can read his whole interview over at the Hatchet Herald. But if your only question is how he felt about the SNL spoof, I’ll save you the trip. He loved it. Juggalos do indeed have an awesome sense of humor. Well at least J.

ICP were already well on their way to becoming the Meme of 2010 before “Miracles” came out, but the video basically ensured that anyone with an internet connection wouldn’t be escaping some mention, somewhere of the Dark Carnival for the entire year. I’m also fairly certain that the launch of the official Big Money Rustlas website will only amplify the exposure! Woop! Woop!

You Should be Listening to… White Ring

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

NYC’s White Ring brings a dark and syrupy fog where haunting synths, creepy melodies waltz about with the sort of vocal and rhythmic manipulation more characteristic of a Dirty South club banger than your usual Electro jam . It’s that latter part that has drawn White Ring some comparisons to SALEM, that while warranted aren’t entirely accurate.

White Ring really are their own purple imp who is not afraid to move beyond getting Chopped and Screwed by dabbling in everything from Goth, Ambient and Electro in crafting songs that toe the line between catchy and experimental while taking you deep into a dark rabbit hole.

Take “Suffocation” for example. A song that makes full use of White Ring’s unique charm of mixing so many disparate influences into one cohesive and catchy song. “Suffocation” goes everywhere from the Post-Rock drone of Flying Saucer attack alongside the enthusiastic bop of Julie Ruin era Kathleen Hanna all over a Codeine coated beat.

Or how about “Roses” which erupts from the bowels of Hades with effortless transitions back and forth between a syrupy slink and old-school Trance. There’s a rich and bone chilling tapestry making up the back bone of every White Ring song that’s not only fun to listen to, but also really fun to dissect.

White Ring’s only official release thus far is a split 7-inch out with like minded oOoOO on Emotion Records. The single features the aforementioned “Roses” from White Ring and “Seaww” from oOoOO.

There are currently no upcoming shows listed on the band’s Myspace but I’m sure it wont be too long until they’re playing somewhere in the NYC area.

The First Meeting of The Crappy Movie Council This Sunday!

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

For many, Sundays are reserved for recovering from Friday and Saturday’s debauchery and decompressing for the scorn of Garfield’s existence…Mondays. But that doesn’t mean Sunday’s need to be spent being reclusive shut-ins. You can wind-down and socialize all at once! Which brings me to this Sunday which will mark the first installment of the Crappy Movie Council in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

So what should you expect from this new late afternoon event? Well duh, crappy movies of course! We all know hangovers and biting drama are no-no. In addition to that there will also be some fine stand up comedy. And if that wasn’t good enough, the whole thing is Free and for anyone not interested in sobering up there will also be drink specials the whole eveing.

This definitely sounds like a good way to spend a Sunday, so grab your friends, boyfriend, girlfriend, mom, dad or whoever and head down to Coco 66. The Crappy Cinema Council will be meeting every last Sunday of the month so if you can’t make this one you best make it out for May’s installment!
