Wavves: The Making of King of the Beach

Pete Ohs, who has done videos for Wavves and Best Coast produced this short promo video about the making of one of this Summer’s highly anticipated albums, Wavve’s  King of the Beach, which will be out in August on Fat Possum Records.

Most of the video focuses on the stylistic shift most of you will hear going from Wavvves to King of the Beach. Unlike the lo-fi sound that Nathan Williams made synonymous with previous Wavves releases, the new album is slicker than usual and really, really catchy as a result. Nathan went into to the Sweet Tea Studios in Oxford Mississipi along with bassist Stephen Pope and drummer Billy Hayes (both formerly part of Jay Reatard’s touring band) and for the first time ever, a producer, Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse) to make the jump from Lo-Fi to really bright and exuberant Power Pop. I really like the new album… a lot. I love all he “ooh wee oohs.”

Wavves are slowly starting to announce Summer dates in support of King of the Beach and will also be partcipating in this year’s Lollapalooza. Nathan’s also one of four cover stars for this month’s Fader magazine which features an in-depth article on “Wavves’ snotty SoCal punk.”

I’ve been riding Wavves hard on the Bloglin for a while now and I think the sweet and accessible King of the Beach is going to take them to the next plateau… so if you haven’t yet, get aboard this wavve for a ride.
