Yours Truly: Wavves Talk Even More About Making King of the Beach

Can you tell I really like this new Wavves album? No? You’re not around the Bloglin often enough then. Last week there’s was a short video from Pete Ohs, This week Yours Truly get on board the King of the Beach hype train with their own video.

The Band talks more about the differences between their new album and old ones, and performs “King of the Beach” and “Green Eyes” live at Origami Vinyl in Echo Park. Here’s a little “behind the music” for y’all. That performance was originally supposed to take place at our Echo Park shop, but, yeah.. it didn’t. Oh well!

The band is actually in New York tonight for a show at the Knitting Factory, but it’s sold out. Bummer! King of the Beach however comes out August 3rd on Fat Possum Records though. Go pre-order a copy!

No care for him at all.

    2 huge albums he’s going against 3rd:

    1. The Suburbs (Arcade Fire) blah!

    2. Transit Transit (Autolux) the mega dropper!

    Good luck!….

  2. AstralForest Says:

    August ^^

I don’t think he’s going against anything – for one, he’s at a different point in his career as an artist than arcade fire or autolux, and he’s got his own thing going.. I think wavves already has a loyal following (hence selling out knitting fact) and when this record comes out – i think it’s really gonna propel him forward… like really forward.. Good luck indeed.

  4. erikerikerikerik Says:

    P.S. i luv autolux.

  5. AstralForest Says:

meh, i know a lot of “loyal fans” who hate ‘king of the beach’ saying it’s a diverted early blink 182 album!. overly polished out!.

Obviously there are separate in all forms!.

But you still can’t sell bs to a “loyal fan”.

(hence selling out knitting fact) = overly hyped by blogs granted much of his success then and now!.

And as far as “propel his forward” i highly doubt it…ehhh, will see!….

    P.S. i luv autolux (2)

    they’re ^^

    him typo ^^

Having heard the album countless times it sounds nothing like Blink 182 at any point in their career. Yes it’s got some polished production which really suits the band and the songs.

It sounds like a mix between Beach Boys Surf Rock and bratty 70s Power Pop. It’s one of the most addictive albums I’ve heard all year and exactly what they should have done.

I don’t really understand how their can be longtime fans for a band that’s barley been out a few years. I’m a longtime fan then and this is the most natural and obvious progression for the band.

  9. erikerikerikerik Says:

agreed – indeed the production is far more progressed since he worked in a real studio this time around and with a great producer, no less.. but unlike many other bands that had a great EP, but then do a full length that has a production value that creates such a huge gap from what made people fall in love with the band to begin with… here is a great representation/ demonstration of of an artist that clearly knew how he wanted the vibe/ production of the record to be, while it not coming across as something it isn’t.. my pal articulated it better than i could in its sound – but i hear alot of beatles in the melodies too – which is aok with me. key description – “natural progression”. it’s an honest record.

  10. AstralForest Says:

longtime fan? where did that come from?. since when did loyal get mistaken for longtime.

    hmmm! lost

From your description…I’m guessing it sounds like what everybody has been doing for the past year and half!.but a little constrained from the two tracks, i heard last week!.

Progression is always great thing don’t get me wrong!. it just sounds too conceived!.When you think of the beach boys as you were referencing you feel Un-pretentious vibes no over thought out rhetoric. as well with ‘bratty 70s Power Pop’.Judging by the direction he is trying to portray now!.

Overall If i had to be choose based on that…the winner would be Japandroids – ‘post-nothing’ by far.

    exclude be ^^

Hey Astral, what the fuck is up with all the typos n’ editz, brah?

  13. AstralForest Says:

typos n’ editz, brah? i didn’t know you could edit post here? (i’m not an admin cheif)..also if that were the case i would have edited out the displayed ‘slag’ Yo!.

  14. Cornbluth Says:

    chief ^^

  15. AstralForest Says:

    thanks brahh ^^

  16. Trismatics Says:

The new album definitely took some getting used to, I wasn’t cringing before the start of every song because the first two albums are awesomely loud, but if you miss the “old fuzzy” Wavves sound just re-edit them on Garageband and higher up the distortion. I’ve seen him with his other two line ups (Ulsh, then Hill) but somehow I’m not sure if this bands gonna throw it down like Zach Hill did. Still a good album though.

  17. Butane Bob Says:

From the first song to the last song the album is 100% enjoyable.

King of the Beach couldn’t have come along at a better time either. We needed something fresh.

People just need to get over the fact its not a lo-fi record and let themselves enjoy it.
