Slayer

The Game is simple… if only one could exist which would it be? What’s more important… personal relevance, cultural significance, or simply being the better album all other things aside? Choice is yours…

I’d go wtih Slayer’s “Seasons”. For Slayer, it was a return to form in speed/intensity while Lucifuge was in line with the previous Danzig album (although this one had a few more overtly blues tunes on it and the Orbison-y “Blood & Tears”.) But both were big high school albums for me and I learned to play guitar along with songs off both. Danzig is more to my tastes these days, but Seasons is probably more important.

I discovered Danzig way down the line… but even a couple of nights ago I was listening to my tape of Seasons in the Abyss and it still gives me shivers. It’s no Reign in Blood, but while that one was haunting, Seasons is so brutal in how Slayer goes from groovy to manic in a split second… War Ensemble, what an opening… The whole album is just so harsh, ripping right into the flesh.
Lucifuge did a lot for doom metal though, I think it showed a lot of bands how to make music that sounds dirgy without being no wave. Culturally, it would probably be the winner; but whatever.

    Neither!

    “Go all out”

    Motttthurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

SLAYER!!!aaalllllll daayyy.. Gotta love Danzig though and if were a Misfits album or Samhain might have picked different but….Season’s in the Abyss ruled my life way more that Lucifuge.

SLAAAAAAAAAAAYER FTW… I’ve never seen Kerry King get ham boned on video!

Man, I gotta go Danzig. Who else could attempt to sell an album to a semi-mainstream audience with an upside down cross booklet insert? Slayer had 1 audience, metal dudes. Danzig at that time was trying to reach out and snag a bunch of the hair metal fans (at least the chicks.)

He had his cult following but was totally trying to “make it” even if he denies that. It’s pretty clear. This album had a bunch of tunes trying to appeal musically to a mainstream crowd but lyrically were still totally counter culture. Upsidedown cross insert + Pain in the World + funny video for Devil’s Plaything and HILARIOUS VHS released to promote this album, Danzig II wins it. Both in an ironic and totally sincere way. Some how I laugh at and love with purity Danzig II: Lucifuge.

Seasons RULES, but was just another Slayer album as far as I’m concerned. Nothing stand out. Bad ass for sure, but just another bad ass turd in the bowl for Slayer. Danzig II had a clear step for a follow up. Maybe not forward so much since the first can’t be beat, but it was a step somewhere. I think it stands out on it’s own.

Danzig in this case. Put it against the better Slayer albums and my day would be ruined trying to choose.

  8. Noah Says:

Danzig 2. Slayer started goin down hill after south of heaven. All the stuff after that started to sound Monotonous. Danzig on the other hand didn’t really start blowin til Black Acid Devil. As much as I love Slayer, I’m gonna have to go with Danzig on this one. Hard to compare the two though…completely different musically.

Singer song writer, it goes to Danzig
Technicality and Musicianship, goes to Slayer.

  9. Cornbluth Says:

Seasons in the Abyss is a better Rick Rubin album than Lucifuge.

  10. tmboo Says:

Lucifuge… the range and scope on Danzig 2 outweigh Slayers accomplishments on Seasons by quite a bit.

Seasons showed a lot of range for Slayer and is truly amazing in its own right, but Danzig dances circles around them with this one.

  11. Zilla Says:

    SLAYER

  12. noise43 Says:

    Glenn Danzig all day

  13. krim krom Says:

    Danzig, duh. fuck.

  14. MattVanBuren Says:

    in my opinion
Danzig’s best years were from 1977 to 1988
and Slayers greatest album was Reign in Blood

  15. MattVanBuren Says:

Glenn Danzig originated Horror Punk in 1977

  16. raythedestroyer Says:

Its seasons in the abyss, clearly. War Ensemble & Seasons In The Abyss (song) alone make this album legendary. Admittedly though I dont fuck with Danzig, despite his love of Jeet Kune Do, Wolverine and the Occult.
